The motif is noteworthy -- bringing to light the plight of those that are part of the Lord's Resistance Army. This army base has destroyed thousands of African villages simply to kidnap its local children -- boys are forced to become war soldiers; girls are turned into sex slaves. The setting is perfect -- Sam Childers is a mean guy with a (gun) machine, killing and swearing is his favourite time pass, being a druggie and conman is his means of livelihood

Sam Childers (Butler), who has just returned from jail, is quite the hardass. If his tattoo, weapons and boundless Harley Davidson accessories doesn’t prove it, he also frequents hazey bars, and goes on to berate his spouse Lynn (Monaghan) for no longer being a stripper as their doe-eyed daughter looks. In fact, the shotgun-toting Pennsylvanian doesn’t stop short of sticking up the homes of drug dealers with his childhood buddy Donnie (Shannon)

A deep thread of religiosity and personal conflict arising out of faith binds Marc Forster's Machine Gun Preacher, a biographical account of a man truly touched by the divine. "Helping you kids is about the only good thing I have ever done in this life," Sam Childers (Gerard Butler), an ex-outlaw and currently a missionary, tells a local African kid who, so to speak, appears to have "no idea" what Childers is doing there. Childers understands how precious life is

Take a provocative title and an incredible true-life story and the viewer probably couldn't ask for more. Alas, the result is an overwrought docudrama that leaves us lamenting the waste of top-line talent. Loosely based on the autobiographical book by Sam Childers, Machine Gun Preacher chronicles the life and times of the controversial ex-con (Butler) who had an unlikely religious conversion. Released from prison, the former drug addict

The most compelling part of Machine Gun Preacher is probably the end credits, wherein we see the real-life Sam Childers, a violent missionary (an oxymoron if there was one) fighting for human rights in war-ravaged Sudan, via documentary footage. After two hours of a much handsomer Gerard Butler play his cinematic avatar, this is the part of the movie that really hits home with its intimacy and realism. This, in essence, is the problem with the movie

Machine Gun Preacher' is a true-life story that stars Gerard Butler as Sam Childers, a Pennsylvania druggie and hardened criminal whose life changed when he found Jesus. During a missionary trip to Africa, Childers became obsessed with rescuing Sudanese children that were orphaned and recruited by the vicious Lord's Resistance Army. It's meant to be an inspirational story, but Childers' transformation from a heroin-injecting junkie to a hymn-singing family man is so swift
