Mammo 1994

Mammo is a 1994 Indian Bollywood drama film released on 1994. The film is directed by Shyam Benegal, produced by Raj Pius.

13­year­old Riyaz (played by Amit Phalke) lives a poor living in Bombay, India, with his grandma named Fayyuzi (played by Surekha Sikri), and her sis named Mehmooda Begum alias Mammo (played by Farida Jalal). Quite outspoken and stored over his daddy abandoning him, Riyaz does not have many buddies, same is for Rohan. When Mammo plans a surprise birthday bash for him, Riyaz is angry as he believes his buddies will make fun of him as his living is not as good as theirs. Fayyuzi and Riyaz have a quarrel with Mammo, and she goes to the mosque at Haji Ali; she comes when they apologize. Although Mammo was delivered in Panipat during the British Raj, she was one of those Muslims who went for Pakistan after Partition. She and her companion automatically become Pakistani citizens. She is childless. But her wedding is a happy one until her companion’ death. Over economic matters, Mammo is thrown out of the home by her relatives.

The movie touches upon several emotional things of day­to­day life. Unable to expand her visa, she is taken back to Pakistan. Political rights defeat humanitarian ones. The director shows a happy end where Mammo goes to Riyaz and her sis at the end. She acts that she is dead so that she can continue to stay in India after this.
