Story

Manthan is a 1941 Indian Bollywood mythological, musical film released on Jan 01, 1941. The film is directed by Ramji Arya.
Hope, an unparalleled creation of our imagination to sustain life; a fountain of elixir which makes life worth living; a shining ray from with in which removes darkness and brings sunshine, it is that Invisible Something which is an invaluable weapon in the armoury of humanity to fight and win the battle of life. How a great soul hinging his life on Hope ultimately succeeded, is illustrated in this Devotional-cum-Historical picture. . Even in the noise and bustle of a busy Bazar one could distinctly hear the melodious voice of a Sadhu who sang as he walked. Ignored by the busy bodies he came near Jaichands shop, who reverently requested him to have"Jalpan". The Sadhu acquiesced to Jaichands request and as he entered his shop, customers began to pour in and the deserted shop of Jaichand became the centre of activity. . In the town chowk the Garba Dance had already started. Attractively dressed young and beautiful maidens led by jaichands daughter Shashi were moving round the "Tulsi Kyara", singing Garba in praise of Bhagwati and his true Devotee King Vikramaditya. Amongst great rejoioing and applause the function terminated and escorted by her Bhabi, Shashi departed for home cutting jokes with her girl friends. . Unaware of the good luck that had come Jaichands way, his wife was cursing her fate. Unaware of the ways of the world Shashi revealed the world secret of her heart to her friends, for which she got a kick from her mother. Unaware of Shashis determaination to marry King Vikramaditya the Sadhu who had accompanied Jaychand, blessed her. Unaware of the tragic turn Shashis determination had given to her matrimonial issue, her brother entered with the tidings of Shashis betothal. And unaware of the fact that the Sadhu was none other than King Vikram himself, Shashi left home to end her life but eventually met and married him. . In the inviting bright moonlight together they roamed and romanced. Dawn came quicker than anticipated and with it came the message for Vikram to proceed. Parting was painful but a clear perspective of future happiness reduced its intensity. . During the months that followed, Vikram tried in vain to have the Darshan of Bhagwati; while Shashi dared not tell her parents about the legitimacy of her progeny. She was thrown out by her parents and could not be traced by Vikram when he came to take her away. . In the meantime, Shashi was given protection by Shivprashad (the pious head of an orphanage) and had become the mother of a hadsomes boy who was named Raj Ratan. . Years rolled by but Shashi shared her secret with no one. She promised Raj Ratan to give him the name of his father when he grew up and the day arrived when she had to do it. Raj Ratan was all rage and on the same day blessed by Shashi and Shivprashad, he left for Ujjain accompanied by Rondhoo and Bhondoo. . On his arrival in Ujjain, Raj Ratan was lucky in accidentally meeting Rajni, the Raj Malan. Thry becme friends and on Raj Ratans suggestion Rajni agreed to take him to the Darbar. Safely installed ina seclusive spot Raj Ratan chose his time to throw a billet near the throne and in the confusion that followed, he removed the famous Sceptre of Vikram from the throne and made good his escape, after challenging the King to taek precautions in preserving the Nav Lakha Har, which he had decided to rob as a protest against the injustice of Vikram. . Rajni was all upset and when Raj Ratan met her in the garden she ectended threats which he kniw were more to frighten him than to be taken seriously. . Raj Ratans adventure created a stir in Ujjain and when he relieved King Vikram of the "Nav Lakha Har", the whole city began to talk about his courage and grit in subdued tones. . In the meantime, a murderous gang of dacoits had started its nefarious activities under cover of Raj Ratanss name about which he knew noting till one day Rajni with fire in her eyes accused him of the looting of the Treasure Van, murdering wealthy persons, plundering shops and o utraging the modesty of women. He tried to pacify rajni by devying the charges which made Rajni all the more suspicious. Annoyed with everything, he left Rajni to find and punish the miscreants. . Raj Ratans exploits in Ujjain had brought misery to Shivprased and Shashi. What can a mother do but pray for the misguided son? . Meeting the dacoits in their own den and by sheer wit Raj Ratan recovered the treasure and with it he began building charitable institutions. In a short time his fame spread far and wide with the result that King Vikram invited him to his Darbar and made him the Nagarseth. Rajni recognised in the new Nagarseth her lover and, Vikram his adversary when he saw the Navlakha Har in the Nazrana that was offered to the throne. . Quick consultations with the Chief Minister followed and a plan was laid out. Rajni who had overheard this plan preceded the King. When the Royal Sadhoo knocked at the Nagar Seths door he found his adversary ready to welcome him. Both went in. Rondhoo and Bhondoo slipped out unnoted but Ranji was arrested with Raj Ratan. . It did not take time for the news to reach Shashi who for the first time revealed the secret of her being the wife of King Vikram. Annoyed at her sons behaviour but anxious to save him, she started for Ujjain post haste accompanied by Shivprashad. The day of the trial was announced. And on that day the whole of Ujjain assembled to witness the historical trial of the brave young man who was more than a match for King Vikram. . The shining Silver Screen will tell you the rest.
