Story

Naya Daur is a 1957 Indian Bollywood social film released on 1957. The film is directed by B. R. Chopra, produced by B. R. Chopra under banner named B R Films.

It is a movie based on the introduction of machines in our country. It is the story of man vs. machines. Shankar(Dilip Kumar) and Krishna(Ajeet) are best friends and both love Rajni (Vaijayanti Mala) and due to some misunderstanding Ajeet becomes Shankar's enemy. Shankar wants to clarify but Ajeet is not ready to listen and understand. Meanwhile Kundan(Jeevan) introduces machines in the saw mill and a number of workers lose their job. Kundan also brings a minibus and thus the tonga drivers along with Shankar lose their work. Kundan challenges Shankar, to have a race of the tonga vs Mini bus. Shankar agrees for it. Will Shankar win the race? Will Ajeet and Shankar be friends again? Whom will Rajni marry?

A melodrama about the perils of progress: villain Kundan (Jeevan) introuduces an electric saw and cars into an isolated, sylvan village while economic, caste and religious divisions between the rurals are woven into the main story of the rivalry between Shankar (D. Kumar) and Krishna (Ajit) over the heroine Rajani (Vyjayanthimala). The dramatic high point sees everyone joining forces to build a road to prove (via a race between a bus and a horsedrawn carriage) that traditional techonology is just as good as the new machinery. Ironically, the nationalist modernisation argument is advanced by the villain while the benevolent father-figure Seth Maganlal (Hussain) hopes that a humanist attitude will abolish all class divisions. The hero Shankar argues for collectivisation as the proletarian way of managing new technology. Classic Nayyar numbers include Reshmi salwar kurta jaali ka (sung by Asha Bhosle and Shamshad Begum), Saathi haath badhana (sung by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle) and the Rafi solo Main bambai ka babu. *.* NAYA DAUR is the story of two friends, Shankar the tongawala, Krishna Krishna the wood-cutter and the happy peaceful village of Karanpur in which they lived. . Kanpur, far away in the valley of the hills crowned by timber forests, first stop to the sacred temple of Shiva, twelve miles away to which came pilgrims evey day and journeyed forth in the tongas. A village peopled by robust rugged simple men and women who despite the lack of an agricultural economy remained because of the money earned by the tonga-walas and the wood-cutters working for Seth Maganlal, the kind hearted Timber factory owner who belived his prosperity was entirely due to the people who worked for him and that he owed it to them to see they remained happy. . Into this village came Kundan, the Seths city-bred, moneygreedy son and Rajni, a beautiful young lady. Kundan in his greed for quick profits mechanises the saw mill and brings misery to the once happy village of Karanpur. Rajni with her beauty and her preference for Shankar generates bitterness between the two freinds who both loved her. . The friends who were ignorant of each others feelings for Rajni realise this only when Shankar goes to Krishna to propose the marriage of his sister Manju, who secretly loved Krishna; as a way out of the dilemma they decide to leave the decision as to who should marry Rajni to the deity on the hill. A pact is made but Manju who overhears the conversarion between the friends and because she wanted Krishna for herself-puts a spoke in the possibility of the decision being in favour of Krishna- an incident which infuriates him and leads to a bitter enmity between the two inseparable friends. . Burning with an impotent rage, Krishna aligns himself with Kundan in his plan to make some quick money and a bus is inroduced-resulting in throwing the tonga-walas out of employment. . Charged with trying to destroy the villagers by his evil schemes, Kundan takes shelter under the guise of trying to march with the rest of the world that is fast progessing and offers to withdraw his Bus if the tonga-wales can take their tongas faster than the bus to the temple. Shankar realsing the futility of begging for consideration and kindness from Kundan accepts the challenge. . From this bet arises the spirit of Community Effort which Shankar infuses in his fellow-villagers and they en-masse proceed to construct a road that by a short cut would enable Shankar and his tonga to reach tbe temple as fast as the bus. . From these two incidents arise the emotional and economic conflicts that provide the dramatic thrills, emotional upheavals and the storys moral that it is wrong to misuse potentialities of the machine to creat prosperity by making, it create money for the sake of a few rich and generate unhappiness and misery for thousands.
