A collage of characters and stories, this one's a mixed bag. While there's nothing original to keep you amazed, there's enough happening, here and there, to keep you involved. In case you get bored with the lack lustre going-ons between one set of people, there's someone else to focus your attention on. That's the advantage of having so many characters. So, you can take your pick between Jon Bon Jovi's affair-gone-awry with Katherine Heigl

With its ensemble cast, guaranteed to lure in crowds, this Love Actually clone deals revolves around the goings-on at New Year’s Time Square on New Year’s Eve while detailing the trials and tribulations of a bunch of characters whose relationship to each other is interlaced. Prominent among these are Randy (Kutcher), who is the Ebenezer Scrooge of New Years day. He is stuck in an elevator with Elise, who is the back-up singer to renowned rockstar “Jensen”

Considerably less syrupy than last year's Valentine's Day, but cut from the same sappy cloth, 'New Year's Eve', directed by Pretty Woman's Garry Marshall, features an all-star cast of big-ticket names playing hopelessly mushy New Yorkers whose lives conveniently intersect on – what else but – December 31! The Big Apple setting lends this film more character than the generic 'any-town' feel of the LA-based Valentine's Day, and there is some pleasure to be had taking

New Year's Eve is one of those films where the overwhelming star presence makes the film's poster grossly insufficient to accommodate them all, unimaginatively letting the design resort to thumbnail sized pictures of the ensemble. But what is also reduced to a similarly diminutive size in this new film by director Gary Marshall is each character's part. Cluttered with just too many beautiful people, New Year's Eve struggles to instill life-affirming feelings in viewers

If Hollywood were to make a Bollywood-style multi-starrer, New Year's Eve would be it. With a cast that's chock-a-block with Oscar winners, TV stars, teen heartthrobs and cameos, this is as shamelessly commercial as Hollywood can get. It's as though the makers decided on a shooting schedule and then simply sent mass invites urging actors in Los Angeles to drop by the sets of New Year's Eve if they had nothing better to do. This sounds like a fun idea on paper

It’s that time of year. No Christmas stocking has arrived but a hello-2012 has. And Garry Marshall of Pretty Woman dispenses with the straight, singular storyline format for New Year's Eve. Once again, after Valentine's Day, the director looks at the life and love pangs of an ensemble of characters that cross each other's path and go their separate ways. The many-in-one movie, in fact, has become a sub-genre of sorts, overused in this case to the point of tedium
