Although the core issue is the farmer's suicide, Anusha Rizvi touches many a pain areas through her excellent script and narrative. It takes a dig on the news hungry media, scheming politicians and the complex government schemes. It literally shows how politicians and media don't want to address the issue but want to encash it for their own benefit. It is laden with some thought-provoking dialogues by Anusha Rizvi.

This makes the film, at once the most intelligent and humorous Indian commentary in long. It is for sure the only true black comedy in Hindi to appear in 27 years. If you’re wondering what happened in 1983, well, two journalists and a Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. Peepli’s right up there! I don’t know a better compliment to pay. I think you should certainly pay for a ticket.

Come to think of it, the concept [farmers' suicides] would instinctively translate into a serious, thought-provoking film. But PEEPLI [LIVE] takes a grim and solemn issue, turns it into a satire, garnishes it with populist sentiment and makes a far greater impact than a mere documentary, had it tackled the burning issue. In fact, like all Aamir Khan films, PEEPLI [LIVE] marries realism with a winning box-office formula most brilliantly.

For all its engaging wit, every scene and close-up is a compelling study or an untold story. Bottom-line: Peepli [Live] is a well-researched, brilliantly-written and effectively documented creation that hasn't negotiated its wry vision for big screen. I'd go to the extent of saying it's the best Hindi film I've seen this year. And I honestly don't think whatever is left of 2010 could offer anything better to contest that.

Peepli Live lampoons an entire range of usual suspects – voyeuristic media persons, smarmy bureaucrats, scheming local-level political goons and self-serving rulers, all of whom want a piece of the sleepy village where a farmer is about to kill himself so that his family can survive. Thanks to the film's nifty blend of humour and bathos, it does not slip into diatribe mode. It instead acquires the spiky edge of a pulsating yet biting satire.

Peepli [Live] is a funny but deeply tragic story of that 24x7 beast who demands a daily sacrifice. Once you enter its layer — the camera lens — it doesn’t let go till it has sucked every last TRP-worthy drop. The film peers at the world of television news as it gyrates on the axis of egos and TRPs, and then slowly, while cracking ironic jokes and maaroing some sarcastic ones, peels off the masks of all its feigning moralists.

The very opening scene of 'Peepli Live' establishes the film's villager protagonist Natha as a dreamer. It's unlikely however that even in his wildest dreams Natha (played by Omkar Das Manikpuri) might have imagined the nationwide frenzy he inadvertently goes on to create when he decides to kill himself. Buried under enormous debts and his land mortgaged to pay off his loans, Natha is manipulated by his brother Budhia (played by Raghubir Yadav) to commit suicide so his surviving family can live off the government's compensation.

Peepli Live, a small little film, that showcases the real India without glossing over the contradictions of our fumbling-bumbling democracy or getting overtly sentimental about garibi and the attendant grime that goes with it. Refreshingly, the film unfolds like a hard-hitting satire that turns its tongue-in-cheek gaze over almost all that's incongruous in contemporary Indian society: the rural rot, the yawning rural-urban divide, the vote-bank politics, the out-of-sync bureaucracy, the we-give-a-damn political class, the TRP-lusting media and the total insensitivity towards real people, real problems, real solutions for a real India.

Peepli Live, though a highly commendable effort, lacks the bite you would expect from a film that makes a comment about contemporary India. The message is strong but doesn’t hit you with the force you expect it to. This could be deliberate, given that the film underplays the histrionics and keeps the tone light, probably to reach out to a larger audience. But while the humour falls short at times, the drama doesn’t keep you hooked consistently either. The film, then, becomes a sort of in-between, leaving you impressed but unaffected.

It takes exceptional empathy to take on a serious issue like farmers suicides and still get people to chuckle over it. Peepli Live achieves this artful cinematic dodge, allowing you to laugh out loud at the poverty-stricken life of a man about to kill himself. Though produced and fuelled by Aamir Khan, Peepli Live is not a Bollywood film by any measure. For the most part, it is set in a dusty, decrepit village, peopled by the most downtrodden citizens of the real India

Prepare for the unexpected. In an era of predictability, here comes a welcome change. Peepli [Live] is one of a kind - it has no star attraction, it is a satire on a bleak reality; it is matter-of-fact, and socially-arousing, without being preachy. Producer Aamir Khan once again presents a film that is in a class of its own. Set in a fictitious village called Peepli in Mukhya Pradesh, it is a dark comedy inspired by the farmer suicides. The film revolves around two farmer brothers

It is exciting to see a debut director get a genre so right. Anusha Rizvi promised a satire and that is exactly what she delivers. Her understanding of a satire seems perfect as she dabbles and plays effortlessly with it giving a hard hitting message that is laced in condescension yet gets thrown in our faces masqueraded in humour and jokes. So Peepli Live, deftly maneuvers through the putrid government schemes and scams exposing the suffering of the debt ridden, poverty struck, helpless Indian farmers. While she highlights all the malaise, the movie at no point becomes visually displeasing. It shakes up our conscience and wakes us up from our slumber but through bouts of laughter.

But the man who unobtrusively steals the show is Omkar Das Manikpuri. The frail Natha has the tonnage to take on the combined might of the media and polity, and the beauty is that he doesn’t know it. Propelled relentlessly towards an end he doesn’t want, he turns out to be an unlikely hero: the film’s chilling conclusion, which makes up in spades for its sagging bits, is even darker than in the cult black comedy, ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’. ‘Peepli [Live]’ is the kind of film we need more of. Watch it.
