Story, Synopsis, Trivia, Dialogues for Pinjra (1973)
V. Shantaram, a legendary name in Indian cinema is well known for giving his audience good films. The hard-hitting 'Pinjra' is another milestone to his credit. Pinjra is the story of a reformer by whose selfless efforts, his village is awarded the shield of the best village. People call him Guruji. People in his village are very far from any kind of infoxication or any other bad habits, due to which Chandrakala's nautanki troop is not allowed to perform in his village. When she erects her tent outside the village, the villagers get distracted. Guruji warns Chandrakala to leave the area and destroys the tent. But when for the second time, the villagers go to see her show, then Guruji also comes to Chandrakala and then falls into the trap of her body's magic. Magic forces Guruji to transform slowly. Sometimes, he prepares medicine for her and sometimes he translates 'Meghdoot' to her troop members. Guruji, who earlier regarded these dances as intoxicating, now turns a man blind and binds him to a cage. He is is now forced to believe that this body itself is a cage, so one cannot hate the cage.
The tragic consequences through which two people believing in different ideologies in life have to go through, when they come together, is depicted in the film. V. Shantaram has tried to present this in the form of rustic Nautanki and an idealist village school teacher. Both under each others influence lose their individual identity and meet tragic ends.
