Ponnar Shankar 2011

Ponnar Shankar is a 2011 Indian Tamil action film released on Apr 07, 2011. The film is directed by Thiagarajan. The past few movies written by Kalaignar (Uliyin Osai, Penn Singam and Ilaignan) ended up being damp squibs at the box office, and it looks like 'Ponnar Shankar' will meet the same fate. Sad, because of all the movies, the story of Ponnar and Shankar had the most potential, but inconsistent direction, editing and acting ensure that it doesn't fulfil any. Though it is a story about ancient warrior-kings, it is irking that attention to detail is sorely missing, which results in unintended humour at times. The best example of this is the introduction scene of Ponnar and Shankar, where they are asked by their teacher to breach a dam that is depriving farmers of water for their crops. But what is shown is clearly a structure that was built by the Britishers, who came to the country centuries later. Other examples of inconsistencies are the revealing costumes worn by Muthaayi and Pavalaayi, the wire stunts of Prashanth in action sequences and the bamboo dance of Nagaland featured in a dance sequence in Kongu-land.
