Story

Ponniyin Selvan is a 2005 Indian Tamil costume drama, romance film released on Jul 02, 2005. The film is directed by Radha Mohan, produced by A. M. Rathnam.
Director Radhamohan proved his worth in his maiden venture Azhagiya Theeyae itself giving a quality entertainer. In his next Ponniyin Selvan, Radha has come out with a soft melodrama which aims at imparting confidence in the minds of youths today. Though on the slowside, Radha Mohan has managed to sustain the interest in the movie narrating the sequence of events with certain amount of class and conviction. For Ravikrishna, after a poor outing in his last Sukkran, Ponniyin Selvan is a huge relief. Not just the entire story revolves around him but has enough opportunities to act. Gopika plays a bubbly young girl. After a long interval, it's heartening to see Revathy, who continues from where she had left. As usual Prakashraj has come out with a cameo adding necessary strength to the movie. The movie is about Venu (Ravi Krishna), a youth who lives with his mother Ponni (Revathy). A responsible youth, Venu works in a factory and gets his sister (Devadarshini) married off. He has his mentor Guru (Prakash Raj) living in his next door to whom he turns up for sagely advice in times of crisis. He also has the company of girl next-door Kani (Gopika). However, Venu has one problem in life. His left cheek gets burnt in a fire accident when he was young which leaves in him an inferiority complex to take part in social events. He decides to go for a plastic surgery on his face, which doctors assure would make him normal. Venu works hard and saves money for his operation. Unfortunately his life undergoes a turn here and he obsessed by money loses men and their affection around. The rest of the story is all about what happens then. Does he succeed in his mission? Radha Mohan has done a remarkable job in giving a clean family entertainer with out any double meaning or vulgar dialogues. However he had shown the same interest in setting the pace of the movie, it could have been more engrossing. Ravikrishna does a decent job while Gopika and Prakashraj are very convincing. However walking away with all honors is Revathy for playing the mother's role to perfection. Vidyasagar's music is good and the production values are acceptable. Amidst action-packed masala movies these days, Ponniyin Selvan is a refreshing change.
