Story


Pratidwandi is a 1970 Indian Bengali drama,social film released on Oct 27, 1970. The film is directed by Satyajit Ray, produced by Nepal Dutta.

This movie deals with calcutta in its early 70’s. On one side the naxalites movement at its height and on the other side, a corruption, unemployment frurtration of the youth and depreciations of values. Siddhartha Chowdhury, a bright, medical student, has to leave his studies after his father’s sudden demise. This young protagonist comes to the street to find a job He facer interviews one after the other, but all in vain.25years after the independence, corruptions, manipulation compromises are the norm. Siddhartha gets angry with this city. He is not alone, all the youth is competeting with him, have the same experiences. Siddartha’s routine doesn.t change for years-the same testimonials, interviews, candidates crowd and finally no response-he is almost tired. Sometimes he visits his old medical hostel, relatives and chats with few old friends like Adi and Shiben. But when he get’s a job offer outside the city, he doesn’t accept. He feels a strange bond with this city, a bond which he can’t break or ignore. Shddhartha is very disurbed with his only sister Tupu’s (Sutapa’s) life who makes compromises and even accompanies her boss whenever he needs. Tupu is in step with the ‘times being she is practical, seductive and willing to use her beauty for her career. She has joinded dance classes and preparing to choose modeling as profession .Siddhartha finds his innocent sister has changed a lot, Siddharta’s brother Tunu, has also changed a lot. He is now a young student leader who still belives in revolution. He leaves the city to work for the peasants. Siddharta finds his unfulfilled dream in his fellow comrades since he is basically an ideologist. He can't make compromises, sometimes even loses his temper. Apart from this he is really a dreamer. In this toxic city life, he still remember the soul's whisper, the singing bird he heard years before. He has searched for the bird but can’t find it. Nowdays when his struggle, frustrations makes him nostalgic for his childhood days, the birds whisper, medical college life still haunt him. Sometimes strong images appear in his dreams. Siddharta is overstressed. Incidentally, he meets Keya, a beautiful young lady from Delhi, who has came in this city for two years. Keya is motherless and from a rich background, but the most important thing is, she is quiet and restless Siddharta finally finds a new stage in his life. Soon the couple begins to date, and Siddharta gets a new inspiration to compete with his peers. Finally he rebels. On a scorching summer day, he speaks up against the heartless interview board members. He waits there long house loser his patience and enters the room to beat them. He disrupts everything inside the room, protests against the corrupt system, the rebellion inside him finally comes out. He decides to accept the offer for a medical salerman’s job which was reconmended by his one time close ‘nareshda’ a union leader. At the end of the movie we find siddarta in balurghat with his new job, residing in a cheap hotel. A letter is read out in the background which he has written to Keya about this new city its life. Most suprisingly, Siddharta finally finds the whispering he heard in his tired youth’s life. He promises keya to prove himself again.
