Prem Patra is a 1962 Indian Bollywood social film released on 1962. The film is directed by Bimal Roy, produced by Bimal Roy under banner named Bimal Roy Productions.

Two medical students - Arun Kumar and Kavita Kapoor are the most sought after students in college. Arun, an orphan has been brought up in his father's friend's house since childhood. As the best student in college he has earned the opportunity to be sent to England on a scholarship. Ratna loves Arun and gets jealous of Kavita. She writes a letter to Kavita in Arun's name in order to create a misunderstanding between the two and this incident takes on an ugly shape. An upset Kavita takes the matter to the college principal, and as a result Arun's name is withdrawn from the scholorship. Arun is shocked at Kavita's indifference, the principal's decision and Ratna's misconduct. In his village, the zamindar agrees to sponsor Arun's education provided he marries his daughter Tara. Reluctantly he agrees to marry her and leaves for London without even meeting her. Meanwhile, Kavita understands her folly and is guilt-stricken for ruining Arun's reputation. She is also expected to get married to an NRI Subhash. Coincidentally, Tara happens to be Kavita's cousin and comes to stay with her to get groomed as a city girl. But in the process Tara and Subhash get close to each other and Kavita starts writing love letters to Arun on behalf of Tara. Arun has by now fallen in love with the 'Tara' who writes lovely letters to him. But his hatred towards Kavita is still strong. Everything goes well till one day in an accident Arun loses his eyesight. He is now on his way back to India but everyone turns their back to him and Arun and Kavita's love faces its toughest test. The story revolves around two medical students, Dr Arun Kumar Mathur and Dr Kavita Kapoor. While Kavita is the most desired girl on campus, Arun is that topper in college. Arun, an orphan was brought up in his father's friends' house. All his expenses are taken care of and he works hard so that he can prove that he is deserving of the same. Being the best student in college earns him the opportunity to be sent to England on scholorship for his further medical studies. On the other hand, Kavita is plagued by some love letters that she has been receiving. Over time, Arun and Kavita get attracted to each other. Seeing this, Ratna, who is the pampered daughter of Arun's foster father and loves Arun, starts feeling jealous. Her jealosy makes her write a love letter to Kavita in Arun's name, in order to create a misunderstanding between the two. But this act takes on an ugly turn. However, in the process, Tara and Subhash get close to each other. Kavita starts writing love letters to Arun on behalf of Tara. Arun has by now fallen in love with the 'Tara' who writes lovely letters to him. But his hatred towards Kavita is still strong. Arun, the handsome, young medico is denied his scholarship for higher studies in England because his costudent Kabita accuses him of misbeh- aviour. . He however manages to arrange the funds for going to England and in the process is betrothed to Tara whom he has never even seen. . A series of love-letters follow between Arun and Tara. He is thrilled at what Tara writes happy that although he has never seen her, she is just the girl he wanted to marry. . On the other hand, he could not forget Kabita, his one time co-student who was responsible for unjustly depriving him of his scholarship and expresed his deep hatred for her in his letters to Tara. . The only snag in the situation was that Tara, a close relative of Kabita, was a simple village girl anf it was Kabita who was acting as the ghost writer for Taras love-letters to Arun. . But how long could this game go on? One day Arun returned home and what began as an innovent prank broke out into a veritable storm in which the participants were tossed about mercilessly.
