Something happened to us in the ‘90s. A lot of which is rightly credited to the then Finance Minister (and the present PM) Manmohan Singh, though curiously not as much to his under-rated boss, PV Narasimha Rao. India began to economically leap out of a soft-socialist, porous curtain. The insecurities of the urbane Indian toward the West gradually gave way to a certain swagger about being who you were. Doordarshan ceased to be our only source of entertainment

Good spoofs are hard to come by, but director Shashanka Ghosh's Quick Gun Murugun is a rare exception. Based on the iconic Channel [V] character created in the mid-nineties by Ghosh himself and writer Rajesh Devraj, the Tamilian cowboy in bright orange pants has now crossed over to the big screen for a full-length feature.

Recall the cinema of 1970s. The villains would spray bullets at the hero, even throw bombs at him, but the hero would come out unscathed. The hero, in turn, would fire in the air, the bullet would hit the lamp post, bounce towards the villain and enter his skull. The hero was truly a superhero. Welcome to the crazy, madcap world of QUICK GUN MURUGAN. In this film, the hero and villain are at loggerheads.

It was 15 years ago when a pot-bellied, middle-aged Tamilian spouted quirky one-liners on Channel V, shooting off his lips as quickly as his gun. Quick Gun Murugan was then a revelation that has now translated into a film. Shashanka Ghosh's Quick Gun Murugun (Dr Rajendra Prasad) is a smooth-talking, morally old-fashioned vegetarian cowboy, and the unlikely superhero of this sambhar western. His colourful feathers are ruffled by a non-vegetarian food mogul, Rice Plate Reddy (Nasser).

Beware. As the title and cast may suggest, Quick Gun Murugun is an offbeat southern curry western in spoken Tamil, Hindi and English, quite unlike anything else you may have seen. Before Ram Gopal Varma blogs about it, let me say that I, peppermint Tejpal, have known director Shashanka Ghosh and writer Rajesh Devraj for over 20 years, from our cub days as copywriters in HTA Delhi to working together in Channel [V], Mumbai, where the duo unleashed QGM for the first time.

Back in the 1990s, Quick Gun Murugan first arrived on a music channel. A spoof on the obese but unputdownable action heroes of Tamil potboilers, the cowboy enamoured an entire generation of young couch tomatoes with his flashy clothes and flamboyant antics in snappy promos played between songs. And SRK's Yanna rascala in Om Shanti Om and MS Dhoni's Mind It act for a cola company show his memory endures.
