Ram Aur Shyam 1967

Ram Aur Shyam is a 1967 Indian Bollywood comedy, family drama, drama film released on Jan 01, 1967. The film is directed by Chanakya, produced by Chakrapani under banner named Vijay International.

Abused by an oppressive brother-in-law Gajendra (Pran), Ramchandra (Dilip Kumar) runs away from home, and ends up in a small village where he is mistaken for Shyamrao (also Dilip Kumar), and must accept Ganga (Leela Mishra) and his new name or face severe exorcism. Meanwhile, Shyamrao is mistaken for Ramchandra by Anjana (Waheeda Rehman) and her dad (Nazir Hussain). When Gajendra finds out, he is enraged and attempts to beat the stuffing out of the person he thinks is his brother-in-law, but Shyamrao refuses to be abused or beaten, and all of a sudden things start changing in the household as well as in the community. It is not long before Gajendra finds out about the truth, and plans an ugly death for Shyamrao, and all those opposed to him.

A successful Hindi remake of Chanakyas equally successful Telegu Ramudu Bheemudu (1964, with NTR) and Tamil Enga Veetu Pillai (1965, with MGR). In double role Dilip Kumar plays twins separated at birth who grow up to become the timid Ram, who is terrified of villain Gajendra (Pran), and teh boisterous Shyam. They are mistaken for each other, even by their respective girlfriends Anajana (Rehman) and Shanta (Mumtaz). *.* The sudden coflicts of human lives and fortunes which occur when destiny takes a hand in the game is revealed vividly and with great melodramatic impact in the saga of the lives of two young men, one nemed Ram and the other Shyam. . Both of them who resemble one another but have never hiteroto met, live in neighbouring places. And both, moreover, are of very different temperaments! . Ram si timid, retiring and never wants to assert himslef, whereas Shyam is robust, boisterous and is always upto all sorts of mischief. . Ram lives in perpetual fear of his wicked brother-in-law Gajendra, who plots to seize all his wealth and estates from him. Rams sister Sulakshana and niece Cuckoo love him very much. Gajendra tries to arrange a match of Ram with Anjana, wealthy and beautiful, the only daughter of Rao Saheb Gangadhar Jadhav. But this ends in a fiasco, and Ram runs away form home to save himself from the evil designs of Gajendra. . Fate did not keep its grinding hand out of the lives of these two identicla looking young men. One day, the boisterous Shyam meets Anjana, who naturally mistakes him for Ram and is very pleased with the change which seems to have come over him! Anjana and her father hustle him off on a trip to Kodaikanal! . Shanta, a mischievous girl of Shyams village who used to be a playmate of Shyam, spots Ram dressed up as a `Sadhu in a group of `Sadhua. She drags him home to his mother, taking him to be Shyam! . Event after event piles up rapidly to make love bloom between Ram and Shanta, and Shyam and Anjana. Shyam now installed in Rams home, quckly perceives the true state of affairs here and proceeds to set things right. In the process he gives Gajendra a beating and every one is astounded! . Gajendra smells something fishy in this `new Ram and decides to slove the mystery! Anjanas father, visiting his farms in the nearby village sees Shanta and Ram together! Thinking Ram to be one and the same person, he warns his daughter that this man is a philanderer, playing with the hearts of two innocent girls! . Ram at last, reveals his real identity to Shanta but is discovered by Gajendra and his henchmen, who kidnap both of them and carry them off to imprisonment in an old castle. . Immediately thereafter, Gajendra contrives to expose Shyam as an imposter who has taken Rams place in order to size all his wealth. He accuses Shyam falsely of Murdering Ram, and Shyam is arrested. .
