Rang Rasiya is much more than just a period film. It’s a statement on behalf of people who reject intolerance and are continuously striving for a new India which will give space to free voice. It’s a piece of art.

This film has been in the cans for several years, but given the timelessness of the story it tells and the crucial issues it addresses, it has lost none of its relevance. Rang Rasiya is as good a film as any you have, or will, see this year. Strongly recommended.

Irrespective of any fault Rang Rasiya is a piece of cinema you could watch. This one will stand as one of the most deserving biopics in an industry which is suddenly trying to make films on just about anyone. Rang Rasiya is on a league of its own, meaningful and relevant a century after the man has gone.

Rang Rasiya is not a perfect film and not for everyone but for those who would like to know more about one of the best painters ever, this one will be worth your time.

It’s these superfluous sex scenes and the appalling acting by the girls (except the delicate Feryna Wazheir playing Frenny) that just destroyed this otherwise interesting and smoothly told tale. By adding (because they really do seem lathered on top) these dispensable, obvious moments of lust, the film cheapens itself and stops feeling like an artistic A-grade take on the life of a world class artist that it should and could have been.

The relevance of this movie then will be lost on no one in the audience. The relationship between art and morality (or the public and morality itself) has not been a linear one. We tend to go back and forth on this subject every few generations.

For choosing to tell the story of this extraordinary artist and for standing up for artistic freedom, Rang Rasiya is recommended. That it could have been a far better film, is another story.

The film’s high point is seeing Ravi Varma’s paintings. It establishes that the painter-artist’s life is a powerful story that needs to be told by a better, more accomplished director and actors.

Wish there was more subtlety of desire and less in-your-face lust and sex. However, Mehta deserves huge credit for tackling a subject of this kind — the sensitive issue of petty politics curbing freedom of art and expression has been dogging us for centuries and continues to do so.

Despite all its flaws, it is relevant even today. It has a message that humanity struggles to accept a lot of things, and the more open-minded we are – the more towards greatness we move as a race. But the message gets lost in the overly forced romance. Watch it to learn the story of a great artist, who is historically significant to the rise of Indian art. But there is little else to offer.

Although, Ketan Mehta’s Rang Rasiya isn’t a perfect ode to the great painter, it certainly deserves applause. Rang Rasiya is a bold film. It is a colorful portrait of love, passion and the dreams of an artist.

I would still watch Rang Rasiya, for what it’s trying to do. The hope is that as there are more and more bold themes, these creases will be ironed out to give us a wholesome, less self-aware film. Till then, this is a decent enough start.

My review of Rang Rasiya (2014) by bangreaayushi

No consistency found! The film ‘Rangrasiya’ is nowhere a consistent film. It has many ups and downs and somewhere it makes you realize that you are watching a film that is extremely pointless and not reciprocating. The film is about two artists who are from duly different backgrounds. Let’s find out more about the film’s story This film is a biopic to artist Raja Ravi Varma, which is the extracted from the Indian history. This is the story of the Indian artist who made it to paint the icons of Hindu mythology out of the temples and royal palaces. The film opens up in a coutroom. The movie highlights the life of Raja Ravi Verma and also his love life with a Maharastrian woman. Talking about the performances, Randeep Hooda has portrayed the character with keen interest. The film has many portions, which beautifully portrays the life of young artists. Nandana Sen is stunning in her Maharastrian attire and has played the role of fascinating music artist. If you are a fan of Nandana Sen then this is surely a must watch film. The music of the film is very soothing and has got good lyrics. The film has a very promising cinematography which reminds you of the ancient Indian heritage. The choreography is also traditional. There are many scenes where Nandana Sen has exposed. The passionate chemistry between Randeep and Nandana Sen is worth watching. The censor has banned few scenes, which were not appropriate in terms of exposures. The film has many ‘wow’ moments, which makes you realize that you are in the aura of ancient India. The paintings shown in this film depicts the ecstatic love and passion. The movie was in talks mostly due to the posters showing two naked bodies all colored with shades of colors. What attract a common audience are the beautiful sets, which have been designed especially to give the real life feel of the ancient India. The dress designer has worked hard in given the typical looks to both the leads. Randeep and Nandana’s outfits are very simple yet they are elegant. The film has got no consistency. The directors have worked upon the body languages, which make the two leads very bustle with energies. The film’s goes well as per the title in terms of colors, ‘Rangrasiya’. The supporting cast is good, but somewhere it also makes you feel that there are many flaws in the script. The story’s quality content makes it look rich, but the writer should have emphasized more on the story rather than the language. The film has played with many different shades of colors and it is seen that the directors have worked hard in giving the quantity color to the film. The film’s editing is good and is impressive with the guidelines and morality based work. The film will keep you entertained. The film has got many highs and lows on its work.
