Ignorance is darkness and knowledge is light. Instinctively every human beings gropes in darkness seraching light. Rangeela tells the sad story of a village boy (Babulal) who was denied the chance to go to school and live normal childs life. The step-mother made him do all household duties and he earned the nickname Budhu (idiot). The ignorant village boy makes a bold flight from his unbearable life of ridicule, to Bombay. . In the hectic city he lands himself in an exhilarating adventure. He comes across a school teacher (Vidya Devi) who takes kindly to him because of his eagerness to learn and disprove that he is not a Budhu. Eager and enthusiastic Babulal learned at all leisure hours of Vidya and at other times tried to earn his bread by selling channas in front of the school. His genial nature helped him to build his trade and even enabled his to own a lucrative shop in front of the school. This material success did not damp Babulals quest of knowledge. He sometimes helped schoolboys in their pecuniary difficulties to pay their fees and purchase stationery, in return of their teaching him what they had learned at school. . Vidya was proud of the achievements of Babulal. She asked her erstwhile illiterate village youth, now a cultured and successful businessman, what his aim in life was. Babulal readily replied that he wished to earn sufficiently to build to a school in his own village, so that no future child there should be called a Budhu. It was a personal triumph to Vidya, the school teacher. And she looks to Babulal with respectful affection. . Babulal presumes that the handsome teacher has falled for him. And his subsequent behaviour to her creates a grave situation for Vidya. Her betrothed lover Devendra becomes jealous of Babulal, resulting in a quarrel between the lovers. Babulal Over-hears Vidya explaining to her cross lover that her affection to Babulal was only that of a teacher to her brilliant boy. Being no more Budhu but an enlightened man, Babulal withdraws wiser. . Meanwhile Babulal hears from his father of financial difficulties. To save his house and his fathers reputation Babulal sells his shop to go to his village and to fulfil his cherished desire of building the school.
