Story

Sangshoy is a 2007 Indian Bengali drama film released on Apr 13, 2007. The film is directed by Saibal Mitra.

Set in a small hamlet called Sunthaleykhola in north Bengal, the story revolves around a widow Anita (Rituparna), her six-year-old son Bubai (Jiyan Mitra), an ambitious doctor Shyamal (Kunal Mitra) and an activist with leftist leanings, Moitreyee (Sudipta Chakraborty)
They arrive at a hill station for a holiday which leads to volatile changes in their relationship. The change of scenario brings about shifts in their relationships too. Shyamal, as a precursor to marrying Anita, tries to consummate the relationship. Anita reluctantly submits to his demands. But the silent and observant Bubai reacts strongly against the change in his mother's approach to life in general and to him in particular.
As he goes out looking for his mother (who is on a rendezvous with Shyamal) on a stormy night he almost dies but is rescued in the nick of time by Moitreyee. She used to be a fan of Anita's dead husband Aranya, a Leftist poet, but is now involved with an extremist group hiding in the jungles of north Bengal seeking to establish a new order. However they are unable to save Bubai. Bubai dies, not of bronco-pneumonia as has been diagnosed by Shyamal. He passes away due to a mysterious fatal illness specific to the hill climate.

The film revolves around four characters within a span of seven days in a hill resort surrounded by deep natural forest in North Bengal. Anita is a widow of a leftist poet Arannya with a history of left political loyalty and her 6 years old son Bubai. Shyamal a doctor, liberated, ambitious and advocate of Globalization. Maitreyee, a radical leftwing activist represents three corners of a 'Space' where a sense of dilemma exists in each individual. It is a confusing situation for Anita who wants to break away from a conventional left minded Bengal society to escape to a contemporary free global society that is emerging in West Bengal. No body knows whether the drive will be prosperous for Anita and her son. The Characters meet one another head-on within a cloistered atmosphere of the hill resort on a weekend trip to sort out their point of views and the web of confusions Anita falters on her responsibility of a mother, a tragedy strike, she looses her child. Now, should Anita continue to explore the global route or get back to where she belongs and by something indigenous as some are doing.
