Saptapadi 1961

Saptapadi is a 1961 Indian Bengali drama,family,romance film released on Oct 20, 1961. The film is directed by Ajoy Kar, produced by Uttam Kumar.

set in the back drop of war, the film opens to shows a christian doctor, a popularly called bab? saheb who treats the poor and runs a hospital for them. A soldier brings a drunk military officer to his hospital .While trying to revive her, the doctor sees her face and freezes. He goes back to a time when he was the bold Krishnenedu mukherjee, a talented athlete and a promising medical student. He meets Rina brown, an anglo indian , at a football match in which he hits her boyfriend Clayton . Sparks fly as ring ?and Krishnenda carry on their feud . Circumtances lead to their becoming neighbours . The things change abruptly when the two are forced to act in the play Othello at the college function . Rina's boyfriend leaves to marry another woman. Rina and Krishnendu are attracted to each other but are only drawn close through the death of Krishnendu's mother . The two fall in love. Krishnendu approaches Rina's father with a marriage proposal . He consents but but asks Krishnendu to convert to christianity . Being an atheist, Krishnendu agrees. But hearing this , his father, a conservative staunch Hindu , visits Rina begging to release his son . Rina promises to disappear from Krishnendu's life . Krishnendu comes to her after his conversion . she refuses to marry him and breaks down in the arms of her ayah behind the locked door. Tthe story comes back to the present. Rina ? the officer comes to thank the doctor . She is shocked to see Krishnendu.She runs away but comes back later, drunk grown ? to hate grown ? to hate god . She tells him about the discovery that she was an intelligent daughter of Mr Brown and her ayah and how her mother got killed to save her life when she demanded an honourable life for her . Since then life has only gone downhill for her . Rina disappears again . The war intensifies . Krishnendu mukherjee is called to assist in a hospital in Assam . Here , he recieves a letter from his father telling him about Rina's promise to him and that she has written to him, following her meeting with Krishnendu, apologizing for it . his made him realize the false namourness? of his views and the true value of Rina and her love for Krishnendu . On the other hand, circumtances lead Rina to rescue the old , blind mother of a deceased fellow officer . She brings her to the hospital amongst bombings .She meets Krishnendu again . She runs away and is injured . Krishnendu saves her life and shows her his father's letter . Rina breaks down, claiming to have lost faith in god and love . Krishnendu assures her that nothing has been lost and carries her towards the church from where bells and carols could be heard.
