Sargam 1979

Sargam is a 1979 Indian Bollywood drama,social film released on Jan 08, 1979. The film is directed by K. Viswanath, produced by N. N. Sippy.

Born with a disability of not being able to talk nor hear, Hema lives with her schoolmaster dad, Chintamani, a stepmother and stepsister. Hema is ill-treated by her stepmother, who is now attempting to sell Hema in the guise of getting her married to a much older man, forcing Hema to run away. Raju, a musician, comes to her aid out of compassion, and assists her achieve her goal, to be a dancer. In the process, Hema is attracted to Raju, but is unsure whether he will accept her as she is.

Hema is beautiful young, alluring. There is exciting intoxication in her walk and at the sound of the music of her anklets, trees begins to swing and sway, leaves flutter, flowers open their buds and dance to the sound of Hemas "payals". The gay season of summer too joins in the merry parrade. The countryside a melody of love. Hema hears it all. Hears it, but she doesnt talk. . Her cruel inhuman step-mother beats her up mercilessly, but Hema says nothing. Uncontrollable sobs the throat of her hapless, invalid father, but full of unshed tears, she bear it all in painful silence. The step-mother even arranges to sell Hema like cattle to a butcher, but Hema says nothing. She cannot say anything, for Hema is dumb. . But Raju who plays the "daffi" drums signs to his hearts content, round and about the lush-green valleys and dales, selling joy, happiness and dreams, always keeping within close promimity of Hema.
