Story

Satyakam is a 1969 Indian Bollywood family drama, drama, social film released on Jan 01, 1969. The film is directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, produced by Sher Jeng Punchhe under banner named Punchhe Arts.

This is an emotional movie by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. It is set in the pre-independence era. The story revolves around two friends, Satyapriya (Dharmendra) and Naren Sharma (Sanjeev Kumar). Naren is emotional yet practical and he values the truth above all else, that is, his career, family and life itself. In his first job, he works for a Dewan. Satya, strives to protect Ranjana (Sharmila Tagore) who is the illegitimate daughter of his manager David (Rustomjee) and has been raped. Satya, though the idealist, is unable to accept Ranjana and her child completely and so even through his idealism, his normal human nature comes through. Later when Naren appears, he makes compromises to move ahead in his career. However, Satya cannot accept these compromises. His grand father, a learned man though, follows ceratin traditions and does not allow Satya's illegitmate child to light the pyre and covers this up by saying he is still too young. But the child realise that he is not allowed to do so because he is illegitimate. The grand father feels ashamed and accepts both Ranjana and the child as his own family of takes then to his village.

Nationalist melodrama using the metaphor of illegitimacy. When Satyapriya is born his mother dies (of Mukherjees Anupama, 1966). His father turns into a sanyasi (ascetic) and he is raised with strong nationalist feelings by his grandfather, a Sanskrit shcolar. He grows up (Dharmendra) to become an engineer at the time of Indias independence. Employed by a princely state , he discovers that few of his nationalist-utopian dreams have been realised. The critique of the state nation is illustrated by the unfortunate Ranjana (Tagore) who has been raped by the prince and is pregnant. Satyapriya marries her and she gives birth to the child. The rest of the film concerns the aged grandfathers refusal to accept a child born of sin and refers to a mythological tale from the Upanishads: Gautam accepted Jabalas son, Satyakam, under similar circumstances.
