Story

Sharmilee is a 1971 Indian Bollywood film released on 1971. Twins are often identical in looks, but rarely in behaviour and character. Such a pair of identical twins were Kamini and Kanchan Kamini, vivacious, modern, with a host of friends from both sexes Kanchan, gentle and innocent, spending her time with her gentle friends from the animal world. As the two girls grew up, their parents got anzious about finding a suitable husband for the shy Kanchan, and due to her extremen introvert nature, it was a task beyound them. They had no worries on this score as far as Kamini was concerned in fact, she had already met a handsome young army officer and had fallen in love with him, a feeling that he reciprocated very warmly. That this first meeting between Capt. Ajit and Kamini had taken place in a heavy show storm would have only added to the warmth of their feelings. . Ajit was the adopted son of Father Joseph, a Christioan priest, whom he had not met for years. Unknown to Ajit, Father Joseph was now a neighbour of the twins parents, and when Ajit came home on leave, he was astonished to see Kanchan, whom he mistook for Kamini. Having lost track of Kamini since the night of the snow storm, Ajit was overjoyed at again having found the girl who had won a permanant place in his heart. This time, the meeting culminated in marriage. Just before the ceremony, Kanchan discovered the awaful truth that Ajit believed he was marrying Kamini. Now it was too late to deny what had been ordained. . The simple Kanchan was too innocent to conceal the truth, and on their wedding night she told Ajit that she was not Kamini, but only her twin sister. Believing that he had been deliberately fooled and cheated, he left Kanchan alone on that night, vowing vever again to return. Kanchan, inconsolable in her grief, attempted to end her miserable existence, and was fortunately prevented from doing so by Father Joseph. The kindly priest believed that there was always a tomorrow, and who knew what the new day would bring? . Whilst matters were moving towards such an unhappy climax at home, Kamini was pursuing an adventurous path that led her into contact with Kundan, a notorious gangster, but when this man tried to outrage her modesty, she fled to hr car only to find Kundan blocking the way. In a fit of anger, she ran him down, over and over again, to leave him dead on the roadway. When Kamini realised the seriousness of what she had done, she dragged the body of the dead gangster into the car and attempted to drive away at a mad speed, not knowing where she was heading. An alert patrol car spooted her, and gave chase, only to find the car crashing into flames down a deep ravine on the precarious mountain road. . Back with his unit, Ajit tried to persuade himself that his sorrows could be drowned in liquor. In such an unstable state, he met with a serious accident when the army jeep he was driving overturned. Kanchan and Father Joseph were hastily summoned to his bedside by his Command- ing Officer. The doctors said that he must regain the will to live, if he was to get over Kanchan before him? This was the time for decision, and Kanchan did not hesitate. She cherished her husbands well-being above all else, and in a desperate gamble decided to impersonate Kamini, a task which would normally be quite beyond her nature. She fought back her own feelings, in a triumph of love and sacrifice. . When all seemed well, Fate took a hand once again in the lives of the twins. Kamini Ajits Kamini was not dead. On one hand, Kanchan who was now Kamini on the other, Kamini who was bad. A dynamic situation that takes the emotion soaring to a dizzy climax exploding in the narrow confines of a chartered aircraft, ten thousand feet above the earth a climax destined to sear the silver screen in a riot of clour and excitement, punctuated by tense throbbing of two hearts in love.
