Suhagan is a 1954 Indian Bollywood family drama, social film released on Jan 01, 1954. The film is directed by Anant Mane.
The story of Radha is the story of a simple moderately educated girl brought up in the midst of a middle class reality on the fantasies supplied by cheap romances and Indian and foreign movies. The only difference in her from her companions is that she takes them rather too seriously her dreams of her future married life had taken colour from them, and these accompany her accross the the threshold that sepa rates adolescence from youth. Her parents in the mean while have begun their search for a sutable son-in-law. . Radhas friend Jamuna is already married to one Govinda. With the zeel of a couple which has just settled into their married life, Jamuna and Govinda are eager to see Radha married-to their neighbour Shayam, a young fellow of the steady and "reliable" type. Radhas parents agree and marry her to him. . The "Poetry" threatents to evaporate as Radha assumes the role of the SUHAGAN in Shyams household depending on a paltry hundred odd chips that he gets. The is in no mood to accept the humdrum destiny of a middle-class housewife. Her rebellion vents it self in petty bickerings with her husband, whose smypathetic aud honest attempts to meet her dreams halfway only inflames her the more. . One day the quarrel reaches the breaking-point. Jumuna, Govinda, parents try to appease and cnciliate her. But the stubborn girl would not listen. A nice season for fishing in troubled waters ! think Rambha and her henchman Ramesh who live in a small bungalow across the street. Taking adventage of Radhas sense of grieance, the wily woman succeeds ininducing the wife toleave the home, and accompany her to Bombay. . Radha finds (so she thinks) her heaven in Bombay which acclaims her as a singer. Comforts that money can buy are hers She has alteady left behind the stunted life with a weakling, and is looking forward to a free, artistes life. . It is not long, however, before Radha senses that "managers" Radha and her crew-have other plans for her. One day Rambha frind Shankar attempts a rape on her - which cures her. . Radha, thugh she escapes inpanic, is too proud to go back either to her husband or to her partnts. She chooses to follow the advice of a gentleman adn goes to reacue home renowned for its policy of specially looking after the sefdevelopment of its inmates. Actually it is no better, as Radha finds to her dismay, than a centre of traffic in girls. . She thus stands face to face with the world-on the wrong side of the glittering facade. But this is not going to solve her problem what next? She realizes where true happiness lies, where her true role lies When her strategem for getting out of the rentacles has been carried through, her feet turn to home.
