Story


Swabhoomi is a 2013 Indian Bengali action,drama,social film released on Sep 13, 2013. The film is directed by Ujjwal Chatterjee, produced by Deepak Chandak.

The story portrays the confrontation between lives & livelihood in the village of Shantigram where innocent farmers lead a happy and simple life. Suddenly a civil war affects the village in which Saraswati, the protagonist finds her husband missing. She starts searching for her husband and also revolts when the administration decides to give away fertile land to an industrialist so that he can set up an industry.


This film is based on the famous novel "Adhoba"(married but undeclared widow according to Hindu society) written by Mahashweta Devi. Saraswati, the main protagonist of the story is a simple housewife who stays in a village called Shantigram along with her husband Haran (Debesh Roychoudhury) and their two kids Mukul and Parul. The state government decides to give away vast tracts of village land which is very fertile (Teen fosholi jomi) to an industrialist to set up Industry. The villagers realize the impact of this move on their lives as farmers. They will be losing their livelihood and job as farmers once their land is gone ! How will they survive? Here is starts the confrontation between life and livelihood.The unwillingness of the villagers to give up their land leads to mass destruction and gruesome killings in the village. " Civil War thus rages across Shantigram for the control of the cultivated land for industry." Haran, who had no land of his own does not participate in the protest, his only concern is educating his children and taking care of his family.On the other hand Saraswati is actively involved in the protest movement along the other villagers. Swabhoomi is inspired by a true story and is dedicated to those who lost their lives fighting for their own land.
