Story

Swami is a 1941 Indian Bollywood social film released on Jan 01, 1941. The film is directed by A. R. Kardar.
Kardars ultra-conservative ode to patriarchy tells of Binod (Jairaj) and Indira (Sitara Devi) who were married as children and never meet as adults. Indira grows into a modern young woman while Binod, disinherited when his stepfather has a son, works in a distant villge. Indira haughtily refuses a relationship with a pauper but she eventually realises her duties to her husband and goes to meet him disguised as Shanta, a beggar woman. Binod then falls in love with her, not realising she is in fact his wife. . A good and loving Pandit Bhola Nath wanted to put in the head of Indra the ultra modern daughter of Sir Shanti Sagar. Indra laughted at Bhola Nath. She refused to believe in and adhere to this "old -fashioned" dictum as it was notoriously opposed to the modern social principal of Equality. "Man has no right to think himself the Master of women".This was her contention. . She was married in her childhood to Binod-the adopted son of Seth Moolchand. Binod was studying in Bombay. Hitherto husband and wife had never seen each other. . All was going straight, except Indra, when God bestowed upon old Moolchand a son-a son of his own blood. At last a young rival to Binod was born. Great jubilitions took place. Binod came from Bombay to take part in the festivities. But right from the movement he entered his god-fathers main gate he found a discouraging change in the atmosphere around him. Troubled in mind he went inside and saw his father moving happily among his guests. There was evident indifference in the way Moolchand received Binod. He went upstairs to see his mother. Rama, who was now the mother of her own son, behaved like a stranger. Now Binod understood. He was not wanted there. He kissed the little one and quietly disappeared from the house. . Next day he came across Sir Shanti-his father -in-law and told him that he had left his god-fathers house for good. Shanti Sagar went upset. He brought him in his house and offered him every sort but Binod refused. He must strike out for himself. Shanti Sagar went up to break the news to Indra. He told her of her husbands tragic plight and his resolve. Without a moments consideration she refused to share the poverty of a standard husband.Aquarrel ensued between father and daughter. Downstairs Biond could hear the tempest blowing. He walked out of the house taking with him a poignant dislike against Indra, his wife. Check out this page for more updates on Swami.
