Story

Teesri Kasam is a 1966 Indian Bollywood social film released on 1966. The film is directed by Basu Bhattacharya, produced by Shailendra Singh under banner named Image Makers.

Teesri Kasam is based on Phanishwar Nath Renu's story 'Maare Gaye Gulfaam'. It centres around Heeraman, a bullock cart driver (Raj Kapoor) who is almost caught smuggling contraband, he vows that he will never smuggle. Heeraman is a simplistic man who gets taken in by people easily. Next he gets into an accident carrying bamboo and vows to never carry bamboo again. Thereafter, he is asked to transport a lady called Heerabai (Waheeda Rehman) from a nautanki company (Waheeda Rehman) to the village 'mela' which is quite far away. As she spends time with Heeraman, during the journey, an innocent rapport is built betweeen them. Iftekhar plays the young, flamboyant zamindar who lusts after Heerabai. In the end she is faced with a difficult choice. Life is a nautanki - can she play the role of Savitri for the rest of her life? The movie ends with the third vow that Heeraman has to take.

Wonderfully shot by Subrata Mitra, who shot Satyajit Rays early films, this musical melodrama sees kapoor return to his role as country bumpkin called Hiraman, a bullock cart driver. Transporting a Nautanki dancer, Hirabai (Rehman) to join a performing troupe, he wins her affection with his old songs and by treating the "dancing girl" as a respectable women. . Hirabai eventually finds out that a dancing girl in a troupe is in no position to refuse sex with local potentates. However, his innocence has persuaded her fight off unwanted advances and to leave the Nautanki theatre. She bids farewell to Hiraman at the train station and invites him to come and see her in a different show. . The film ends with Hiraman taking his third vow, telling his bullocks that he will never carry a Nautanki dancer again. The sentimental story touches on the gross sexual oppression of women but in the end places its sympathies with the disillusioned Hiraman rather than with the women. The film is notable mostly for its seemless, lyrical imagery and for Raj Kapoors best performance of his archetypal persona. *.* A simple hearted bullock-cart driver Hiraman is caught with others while taking black-market goods to Nepal. He escapes some how with two bullocks, leaving his cart behind. He pledges never to take black- market goods in his cart. . Now it is someone elses cart and his own bullocks, when he is carrying a load of bamboos, that he meets with a terrible accident with a tonga. It is his second pledge now, never to carry bamboos in his cart. . After leaving a newly married couple at railway station, he notices a man standing near his cart and asking for the driver. The man pays him the advance a female passenger to a destination and rushes back to board the moving train. The man has gone by train and the woman has to be carried in the cart ! Hiraman suspects villainy. . Bad omens make him further doubt, simple as he is, that the person inside might be a ghost. On coming across a temple he prays for his safety. Courageous after the prayer, he removes the curtain to see inside, and he is shocked to see no one. His worst fears are confirmed. . In the frightful journey in the middle of the night, when the rays of the full moon fall in the cart, he sees a woman lying in the chart and exclaims, "Oh ! it is a fairy !" The fairy gets up. She turns out to be a beautiful woman of flesh and blood. After conversing with each other, they find out that they both have the same name. . The closeness of a young over, they reach village-fair, their destination. They part but not before Hirabai ( for that is the name of Hiramans fairy) has invited him to come and see the Nautanki shows and she promises to arrange for their passes. . . Hiraman goes to the usual resting place, finds his friends and proudly boasts about bringing a Nautanki actress as his passenger who has promised to give him passes for the Nautanki shows. Flabbergasted at his good fortune, his friend persuade him to get the passes definitely next morning. . They all go to see the Nautanki. A remark by a drunken-man, "Hirabai is a prostitude", ends in a fight. Hiraman is called by Hirabai who rebukes him severely for making such a disturbance. He explains, "They were calling you a prostitude". They may call me whatever they like but what right have you got to fight for me ?" She retorts. He does not reply. His feelings are hurt and he goes away without seeing the Nautanki. . Birju, the agent brings the Zamindar to Hirabai. He is infatuated by Hirabais charms. She realises, she cannot do without the simple- hearted bullock-cart driver, who estimates her differently, as a virgin and a goddess. She calls him. The quarrel is patched up between the two. . The chart-driver sees the Nautanki plays, meets her. Coming closer and closer to her, he appeals to her to leave this profession. He is disillusioned by her negative reply. Moreover the Zamindar is ever after her. Check out this page for more updates on Teesri Kasam.
