2010 will go down as the year with the most remakes. Sourced from TV shows and films from the '70s and the '80s, the reworked releases this far, have left a lot to be desired. By that measure, The Karate Kid comes as a pleasant surprise. In the film, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) has to move with his single mom (Taraji P Henson) to China. Lonely and trying to fit in, Dre immediately clicks with a girl named Mei Ying.

The film is a re-boot of the 1980's classic which had become a cult film for the '80s teens. It essentially tries to posit Jaden Smith as a chip off the old block (Will Smith) and showcase the talents of the young boy who had already won hearts in his touching performance as Will Smith's son in The Pursuit of Happyness. Does Jaden deliver? Indeed, he does, with his dread locks and loads of attitude which makes Dre Parker

For those who've grown up with the original The Karate Kid, which released in 1984, it's hard to see the logic in a remake, however faithful and inoffensive it may be. That film packed a formulaic but thoroughly enjoyable underdog story with a killer soundtrack; and although the new remake does tweak some details, it's an enjoyable watch, especially for those unfamiliar with the earlier film.

A remake of the original cult hit Karate Kid, this one tweaks the story a bit- Teenage Daniel and his Mom who resettle in Reseda, California are replaced by Detroit youngster 12 year old Dre (Jaden Smith) and his mom (Taraji P Henson) who gets transferred to far way Beijing where Dre is looked upon as an oddity with his braided hair and natural arrogance. The film handles the transition with ease giving us

The beloved cinema of our childhood is being hijacked. Hollywood is remaking way too many movies (and television shows) that an entire generation grew up on. What are we going to do about it, did you ask? We are going to deal with it. This is the age of familiarity and though early evidence indicates that audiences are contemptuous of this year's crop of remakes, rehashes and franchise extensions, it remains to be seen

A fatherless 12-year-old African-American boy (Smith, energetic enough) moves to Beijing when his mom (Taraji P Henson) takes a job there. At his new school, the kid runs afoul of the class bully. Next: He enters martial arts training under the tutelage of a Yoda-like kung-fu master (Chan). Originality and excitement are sorely missing in this remake of the popular 1984 chopsocky flick.
