Tabu returns after a long gap. That should be reason enough to watch Toh Baat Pakki. For she's a fine actor who has proved her mettle, time and again. This time, she opts for a light-hearted comic role in a film that's cast in the mould of the middle-of-the-road comedies that made the eighties' cinema so winsome and breezy. Pitched somewhere between realism and drama, the film somewhat recreates that genteel era when cinema talked about flesh and blood people

Amidst romance flicks that are repetitive and comedies that are clichéd, the romantic comedy Toh Baat Pakki comes as a breath of fresh air as much as the breezy and fancy hill-station of Palanpur that it’s set in. Though not path-breaking in any terms, the flavour of the film is a delectable balance between candyfloss and masala. Rajeshwari Saxena (Tabu) is a distinctive middleclass housewife who wants to get her younger sister Nisha (Yuvika Chaudhary) married to a well-to-do guy

A lot of present-day directors seem inspired by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee's movies. The veterans told simple stories in the most simplistic manner. Director Kedarh Shinde, one presumes, also seems inspired by their master works and attempts to narrate a story that's identifiable and at the same time, dipped in humour. But TOH BAAT PAKKI is not as invigorating as one expects it to be. The film has some wonderful moments, some old-world charm

Toh Baat Pakki is the sort of homely family drama that Sooraj Barjatya might have made on a bad day, about a decade ago. An over-bearing but well-meaning housewife Rajeshwari, played by Tabu, takes in a young man, Rahul played by Sharman Joshi, as a paying guest so that she can match make between him and her younger sister. Only after the marriage date has been fixed, a more eligible bachelor, Yuvraj played by Vatsal Seth, saunters in and now Rajeshwari feels compelled

On a movie screen after almost three years, Tabu here, plays an excitable mid-class housewife. Marrying off the younger sister is for her, each day’s primary concern. Her proud mother, in sheer gratitude, suggests, “You’re like a son to me.” To which Tabu’s Mrs Saxena shoots back, “I am a daughter. We take better care of parents. If only everyone realised this, half of India’s problems would be solved.” You can tell Tabu (like the filmmaker) has one eye on the “rest of India”.

A Pritam soundtrack is always a great indication of how the film is going to pan out. When the score sounds lazy, disinterested and rehashed, you are most likely to sit through a lousy, disappointing and reworked movie. Kedarh Shinde’s Toh Baat Pakki! is just that. Referencing a famous or favourite film is something and copying the main plot and making it sound like a tribute is something else. Toh Baat Pakki!, which somewhere slips in the line

After many years of absence from Bollywood, just what made Tabu pick this film? It couldn’t be the story, since Toh Baat Pakki has an outdated plot which deals with marriage in a silly manner that went out of style more than a decade ago. Couldn’t be the cast or the location, as it’s set in good old Palanpur, where everyone is as puerile as a peda. Couldn’t be the script either, as the screenplay and dialogue are both totally fuddy duddy.

I had once declared great faith in Tabu's ability to be as much of a man as our heroes. But her latest film proves that while she might be a fantastic actress, she really isn't an Akshay Kumar. Toh Baat Pakki works like a Priyadarshan drama devoid of the outrageous plot and the utterly watchable hero, and we're served up a bland, preposterously dated 'comedy' with lame jokes and little to laugh at. Director Kedar Shinde tries hard to channel the wholesome humour of comedies
