Up In The Air is a terrific film. It’s sparkling. It’s sad. It’s deeply engaging and painfully insightful. George Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a man who fires people for a living. He spends 300-odd days a year on the road but this isn’t a problem. Bingham has turned air travel into high art. He’s happy to call a soulless airport hotel home. But Ryan’s comfortably numb life gets a jolt when he is asked to take a younger colleague on his road show. And he enters a relationship with a woman

Who would have expected laughs from a film that taps into two of the most relevant fears and anxieties of our times? Up in the Air, directed by Jason Reitman, turns a story about air-travel and redundancy into a smart, poignant, and oddly comical film experience. George Clooney stars as Ryan Bingham, a bachelor and professional corporate downsizer, who spends some 322 days a year in a business-class bubble, flying across America and firing luckless company employees

The beauty of Up In The Air lies in its immense topicality. Rooted in the present continuous, the film takes up the most pressing concern of today's corporate culture -- downsizing -- and dares to look at what lies behind the dreaded pink slips. In short, who are the people (are they heartless souls?) who hand out the pink slips and who are the people who are handed the pink slips (do they all jump off bridges?). But the film isn't about corporate ethics alone.

Up in the air is so much more than just a film. It is a reflection of the modern day society we live in. It is a realization of how inhumane and cold we’ve become under the pretext of being progressive, practical and professional. The film aptly uses irony to bring to our notice where the rat race and herd mentality can lead us to. Up in the Air is a film that defines the kind of people we’ve become today... how numb we have become towards our surroundings
