Uttarayan 1963

Uttarayan is a 1963 Indian Bengali drama,family,romance,war film released on Apr 26, 1963. The film is directed by Agradoot.

Uttarayan is a film depicting the effects of the second world war on a man's life and in family. Pranbir (Uttam kumar) is a soldier who wants to fight for his mother. Aarti is an innocent educated girl who falls in love with Prabir . Prabir too has feelings for the girl. But Prabir misunderstands Aarati's feelings towards him and he thinks that she is in love with his friend Arun (Anil Chatterjee). Thus he returns to the warfields trying to forget Aarti. In this camp, he meets Rateshwar Bhattacharya whose looks completely matches with him. Rateneshwar is a habildar who has a wife Swati (Sabiriti Chatterjee) and a blind old mother. He has come to fight owing to the poverty of his family. It is then that the warfield was roaring with bullet and missile attacks by its planes. Ratneshwar got injured in the warfield, Prabir promises to Ratenshwar that if he does not remain alive, he would give news of his death to his family. Ratenshwar died and so Prabin returns to Kolkata to give the news of his death to his family. But his looks plays false with him, and Ratenshawran's mother & wife thinks Prabir as thier son & husband. Prabir finds himself in an extrmely typical condition, where his lips refuses to open. It was Shanti who recognizes Prabir, but owing to his mother's condition and society, request Prabir to pray with them. Thus one day Prabir came across Aarati and rescues her from a group of men. Aarti recognizes him but his new identity poses many questions in her mind. She meets Swati and then misunderstands Prabir, blames Prabir for false identity and asscuses him of taking advantages of Swati's feelings. It is than that Prabir tells the entire story to Aarti, and expresses his helplessness. Aarti feels sorry for accusing Prabir. Swati discovers that she is a carrier ? to the union of Prabir and Aarti, and she writes a suicide note to Prabir after which she dives into the Ganga river and commits suicide. Thus the film reaches a final destination, where Prabir and Aarti grant each other? on their life partner but not forgetting the influence of Swati on their life. Thus Uttarayan is a film of tragedy and hardship of a man and the consequences of war on a man's life.
