Story

Waqt is a 1965 Indian Bollywood social film released on 1965. The film is directed by Yash Chopra, produced by B. R. Chopra under banner named B R Films.

A natural disaster forces a family far apart. Though the family members are separated, several years down the line, the destiny connects them in a strange manner.

Lala Kedarnath Prasanta (Balraj Sahni) has 3 sons whose birthdays are on the same day. On one of the annual birthday bashes, a well-known astrologer predicts harsh times ahead for Kedarnath. Lala Kedarnath ignores the prediction and is busy making plans for an even wealthier future. He proclaims to his wife (Achala Sachdev) that he wants them to be even richer. As he talks of the day when people shout after his car, There goes Lala Kedarnath!!!!, there is a sudden earthquake and the whole town crumbles into ruins. When Lala Kedarnath regains consciousness, his house has been destroyed and his family is gone.

The oldest son, Raju, ends up in an orphanage, while middle son, Ravi, (Sunil Dutt) is found on the road by a rich couple who takes him to their home to raise him as his own. Their youngest son, Vijay, (Shashi Kapoor) who is still an infant, is with his mother Laxmi (Achla Sachdev). Unable to find the rest of the family, Laxmi and Vijay live in poverty.

Lala Kedarnath finally traces Raju to the orphanage but finds that he has run away because the orphanage manager (Jeevan) beat him up. Frustrated, he kills the manager and is jailed. As the police drive away with Kedarnath, audience sees young Raju running in the streets and turning into an adult, (Raaj Kumar).

The rest of the story is pretty much about how all three brothers are so close together without realizing that they are related. In the end, the family reunites and they reopen their business and live happily ever after.

A contribution to the lost and found genre (of Kismet, 1943; Awara, 1951) later associated with Manmohan Desais films. The old and prosperous merchant Lala Kedarnath (Sahni) sees his family split and his house wrecked by an earthquake. Trying to trace one of his sons, he learns that the boy was ill treated by an evil orphanage warden (Jeevan) and he kills the warden, earning himself a 20-year strech in jail. The son is raised by the crook Chinoy (Rehman) and becomes the suave theif Raja (Kumar). Kedarnaths other sons are the fun-loving Ravi (Dutt) who becomes lawyer and the hard-working but poor Vijay (Kapoor) who looks after their ailing mother. Vijay is hired as a chauffeur by his girlfriend Renu (Tagore) while Ravi and Raja loves the same woman, Meena (Sadhana). After advocating a fatalist approach to the passage of time, the film turns into a suspense and courtroom drama when Chinoy frames Raja for murder. Raj is defended in court by Ravi. Eventually the family is reunited. The film was a major hit exemplifying a kitschy colour aesthetic (denoting wealth) that was to become popular in Hindi films: a series of living rooms in pink and blue with fountains and circular beds in bedrooms, motor boats and fancy cars in which the rich race each other to get the girl in between attending huge parties. Hit songs included Ai meri zohrajaben (sung by Manna Dey), Din hai babar ke (sung by Asha Bhosle and Mahendra Kapoor) and Aage bhi jane na tu (sung by Asha Bhosle).
