Pungent phrases like 'packs a punch' were possibly made for pulp movies like Yeh Saali Zindagi, a rancid, bitter-sweet street symphony on speed, written and directed by the lanky, white-haired, Sudhir Mishra. Starting with a first rate top-class ensemble cast, Sudhir then packs the adult-film with an assorted bunch of odd-ball characters; a chaotic, multi-layered screenplay, some fabulous original music far removed from the current showy sound

Sudhir Mishra ain't no stranger to gangster rap. He has already proved his prowess at tackling Bollywood's favourite theme in an earlier cult thriller, Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin, where love exploded against the violent backdrop of the Mumbai underworld. This time, emotions go ballistic in the seamy alleys and shady suburbs of Delhi's underbelly. And yes, the backdrop simply takes your breath away. Mishra's canvas -- and cinematographer

Six thick thistle sticks. Six thick thistles stick.' Try saying that again. And again. And some more. How's it going? The beauty of an intricate tongue twister lies in its unbroken rhythm. If nailed, it sounds gracefully articulate. If not, a spew of mispronounced prattle. It's all about saying the right word at the right time at the right pace. Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra's Yeh Saali Zindagi can be compared to one such tongue-twister. It's a fairly simple plot

Yeh Saali ZIndagi is so erratic, expeditious yet entertaining that it is difficult to dissect, describe or define a crime comedy like this in mere words. You have to experience the rampant and raucous roller-coaster ride that Sudhir Mishra takes you through which is unpredictable yet enjoyable throughout. Arun (Irrfan Khan) is in love with Priya (Chitrangdha Singh). But Priya loves Shyam (Vipul Gupta) who is soon to be married to the minister's daughter

Dark, devious and different, Yeh Saali Zindagi is brain-and-brawn drama. Wish the Censor hadn’t beeped so much.

YEH SAALI ZINDAGI is a racy entertainer which blends the right amount of romance, comedy and thrill. You will regret throughout your zindagi for missing this one!

There is more than one way to interpret Sudhir Mishra’s Yeh Saali Zindagi, but the way I see it, it’s primarily a ‘falling-in-love’ story. Set in the heart of old Delhi and thereabouts, the film stars Irrfan Khan as Arun, partner at a local finance company who finds himself smitten when he comes into contact with Priti, a small-time club singer played by Chitrangda Singh. As luck would have it Priti is in love with the future son-in-law of a powerful minister

For Yeh Saali Zindagi, Sudhir Mishra dons many hats. He is the storywriter, director, and screenplay writer, and shares the credit for the dialogues with the impeccable Manu Rishi ‘Anni’ of intelligent comedy Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010). With Yeh Saali Zindagi, just like its hatke title, Mishra presents a thrilling and hatke account of two men and the lengths they go to for love. Yeh Saali Zindagi has romance at its core, and a lot of thrill is thrown in, too

Yeh Saali Zindagi takes its time to unfold, but it’s a delicious little treat if you muster the patience for it. Under its rough exterior of criminals and gunshots, is a tale of slow-burning passion and unconditional love.

It’s fairly simple. The film appears jumbled in parts, merely because no character holds a moral centre. No character, in particular, holds the plot together either. The picture goes all over the place to arrive at an end, even beyond the intended end. You leave for home with an exhilarating ride, still reeling in your head — though not quite the heart. The actors (each one of them inspiringly cast, stunningly moulded) help you get there. The movie seems infinitely better than the sum of its script. That’s usually true for fun thrillers. This is definitely one of them.

Yeh Saali Zindagi needed to be shorter and less flabby. I also wish that Arunoday and Chitrangda were more forceful actors – thankfully Irrfan Khan, Saurabh Shukla, Sushant Singh and a host of other strong performers ably prop them up. Eventually then, Yeh Saali Zindagi doesn’t hit all the high marks it sets for itself but it provides enough crackle to keep you entertained. Check it out.

Crime, politics, corruption, money-laundering and love intertwine as a wicked, yet loveable Mr Fix-It-All Arun (Khan) and small-time gangster Kuldeep (Arunoday) find their paths crossing in a kidnap case. Arun's ladylove Preeti (Chitrangada) is involved. He is hellbent on saving her even though she is involved with another guy Shyam (Vipul Gupta). It takes a bunch of assorted henchmen and bullets to aid them in the rescue act.

The title instantly conjures up a welcome robustness. That phrase is not so much invective as part of the slangy, easy-speak DNA of so many-- an affectionate, ironic, all-encompassing metaphor for life and how it’s such a bitch. ‘Yeh Saali Zindagi’, Sudhir Mishra’s new film, could have been all this and so much more. Instead, it turns out to be a sore disappointment, mining the director’s familiar territory to little effect. The sort of rogue’s gallery
