She is the winner of Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film for the film Ghunghat (1960). She was from Lahore, Punjab. She completed her schooling from Lahore. She obtained her graduation degree from Lucknow. She made her Bollywood debut with the film Kali Ghata (1951). She got married to the actor Prem Nath. The couple had a son Prem Kishen.
