He ruled more than 65 years in bollywood. He acted in more than 116 films. He was born in Shakargarh tehsil of the Gurdaspur district in Punjab. His father was Pishori Lal Anand and was a well-to-do advocate. He completed his education from Sacred Heart School, Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh (then in Punjab) and then was admitted to Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh before going to Lahore to study. He also completed BA degree in English Literature from the Government College, Lahore in British India. He did movies like: Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shair (1949), Afsar (1950), Nili (1950), Do Sitare (1951) and Sanam (1951) and all of which were successful at the box office. His sizzling chemistry with actresses like: Raakhee, Parveen Babi, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman stole hearts of millions. He worked with well known music composers like: Hasrat Jaipuri, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Neeraj, Shailendra, Anand Bakshi, and playback singers Mohammed Rafi, Hemant Kumar and Kishore Kumar.
