He was born on January 17, 1908. He was born in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, India. He was born as Akkineni Lakshmi Vara Prasad Rao. He was an Indian director and producer. He was known for the movies like: Jeene Ki Raah (1969), Sharada (1957) and Bidaai (1974). He passed on June 22, 1994.He was the recipient of the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award by the Government of India for his life-time contribution to Indian cinema in 1983.He was also the first person to be awarded the prestigious Raghupathy Venkaiah award by the State Government of Andhra Pradesh for his outstanding contribution to Telugu cinema in 1981. He acted in Kalidas (1931) - the first Tamil Talkie, in _Bhakta Prahlada_ (1931) - the first Telugu talkie and Alam Ara (1931) - the first Hindi (Indian) talkie.
