She was born on 10 February 1942. She is an Indian Bengali actress. She is the recipient of National Film Award for Best Actress for Bengali film Dibratrir Kabya. She is known for her role in the Satyajit Ray's masterpiece ‘Charulata’. She was raised in Kolkata. She then worked in theatre. She has worked with many known artists like: Sisir Bhaduri, Ahindra Choudhury, Nirmalendu Lahiri and the great Chhabi Biswas. She acted in the plays like: Naa and Kalarah. She made her entry as a child artist with the film Kankantala Light Railway (1950). People appreciated her in the film’ Wedding Day’ in 1960. Her major roles in the movies like: Manu Sen, Streer Patra in 1972 by Purnendu Patri, Ganadevata in 1978 by Tarun Majumdar, Bancharamer Bagan in 1980 by Tapan Sinha, Chokh in 1982 then Chhandaneer in 1989 by Utpalendu Chakrabarty and Utsab in 2000 by Rituparno Ghosh. She is married to Bengali film actor Nirmal Kumar. They got separated and have two daughters. She also wrote her autobiography Ami Madhabi in 1995.
