He was born on 1May 1919. He died on 24 Oct 2013.He was a playback singer. He entered bollywood with the film 'Tamanna'. He is known for singing more than 4000 songs. He has been honored with the Padma Shri award in 1971. He was also given the Padma Bhushan award in 2005 and Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2007. He sang all the Bengali and Hindi songs. He was born to Mahamaya and Purna Chandra Dey. He completed his education from Scottish Church Collegiate School and Scottish Church College. He completed his bachelor's degree from Vidyasagar College. He was trained by Krishna Chandra Dey and Ustad Dabir Khan.He has worked with many known music composers like: Anil Biswas, Shankar Rao Vyas, S.K.Pal, S.D.Burman, Khemchand Prakash, Mohd. Safi. Manna Dey composed songs for the films like Gajre (1948), Hum Bhi Insaan Hai (1948), Do Sitare (1951), Hamdard (1953), Mahatma Kabir (1954), Jasoos (1957) and Pardesi (1957). Manna Dey married Sulochana Kumaran, who was from Kerala. They had two daughters: Shuroma and Sumita. Dey died in the hospital due to chest infection.
