She was born on July 31, 1947. She was born to Abdul Sameed Askari and Sardar Begum Habib Agha aka Naaz. She was of Iranian origin but got settled in Bombay, India. She started her career as a child artist. She did movies like: Sanskar (1952),Yasmin (1955),Lajwanti (1958),Sone Ki Chidiya (1958),Stree(1961). After her family faced financial crises, she started to work as a junior artist. She first appeared in V. Shantaram's Stree and Sehra but she went almost unnoticed. She played lead roles in low budget B grade movies with Dara Singh as hero. Both of them gave 10 hit films out of 16 movies which they did together from 1964-68. She then got supporting actress in ‘A’ grade hit films. Her movies included: Sehra, Kaajal, Khandaan, Sawan Ki Ghata, Anpad, Hamraaz ,Pyar Kiye Jaa,Pati Patni, Mere Sanam, Suraj, Pathhar Ke Sanam, Ram Aur Shyam and Brahmachari. After doing, Do Raate and Bandhan, she was the highest paid actress of bollywood. She did more than 100 movies. She also won the most coveted Filmfare award in 1970 for the film 'Khilona'.
