He is also known as Shankardas Kesarilal. He was born on 30 August 1923. He died on 14 December 1966. He was a famous Indian Hindi lyricist. He was born in Rawalpindi, and brought up in Mathura. He started his career with the Indian railways. He wrote song for the film Aag. He then became famous for the songs in the movies: Patli kamar hai and Barsaat mein. He build good reputation with the music composers like: Salil Chowdhary (Madhumati), Sachin Dev Burman (Guide, Bandini, Kala Bazar), and Ravi Shankar (Anuradha). He was also associated with the filmmakers like: Bimal Roy (Do Bigha Zameen, Madhumati, Bandini) and Dev Anand (Guide and Kala Bazar). He is the recipient of the National Film Award ( President's Gold medal) for Best Feature Film. He died due to mental tensions and alcohol consumption.
