She was one of the first playback singers in the Hindi film industry. She made her bollywood debut on a radio station in Lahore in December 1937.Radio Lahore had started broadcasting on December 16,1937. She was one of the first playback singers there. She was one of the most versatile "playback singers". Her voice was pre-recorded for use in many movies in which actresses would lip-sync to her songs .She sang in many languages like: Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, and Punjabi languages.Her family was against her decision to become a playback singer. When she finally won a contract with a recording company, her family appreciated her decision to sing. But, she had a condition that she would record wearing a burka and not allow herself to be photographed. She was born on 14 April 1919.
