He was born in Zamindari Bengali Hindu family. He completed his schooling from St. Edmund's School, Shillong. He completed his graduation in English Literature from St. Xavier's College, Calcutta. He did his Postgraduate studies in Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University. He had worked in Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khilari, Merchant Ivory Productions Hullabaloo over Georgie and Bonnie's Pictures and Ghare Baire and in Mrinal Sen's Mahaprithibi. He is the Ambassador for the Srimanta Shankardev Movement. He is also the ambassador for the "Dimasa Tribe" of the Cachar Hills of Northeast India, for "Bird Watchers Association of Uttarakhand" and for "MENTAID".
