Ankh Ki Sharm 1943

Ankh Ki Sharm is a 1943 Indian Bollywood film released on 1943. "Ankh-ki-Sharam" is an intimate chapter from life. Whereas other films usually end with a marriage, this film opens with the gorgeous marriage procession of Basant, the only son of Banarasilal a retired Police Officer. The fathet cherished a desire that his son should join Police Service and serve the Country as he had done. But Basants ways on account of his bad associations, were otherwise. Bihari his evil genius prevailed upon Basant to have his beautiful wife Shyama photographed for an advertisement and thus pay off one of his secret debts. When the aged father saw this photograph in all the newspapers, he was so much upset that he slapped his son in the presence of the whole family. . Was he right in inflicting this punishinent on such a grown-up boy? Would it open the eyes of the profligate? Pandeji, the family priest suggested to resort to other methods: "Ankhi-ki-Sharm," he advised, "should be preserved." Banarasilal, started to observe the precept. . When Banarasilal, found Basant addicted to smoking, he defended him by saying that his son never smoked. But things went from bad to worse with the result that one day the respectable father found Basant in the company of a songstress-Minakshi. Often Basant tried to get out of the rut, but failed before the enchanting grip of Minakshi. At last one day, he brought Minakshi in his home while in a half drunken condition. He rufused to listen to his mother and eventhe aged Pandeji whom he dashed aside. Basants mother and sister decided to leave the place, but Shyama would not leave her husband "The place of a wife was by the side of her husbad" declared she. . Banarashilal reached home of find all tings gone jeopardised topay- turvi. His anger was roused to pitch. He tried to shoot his son; but Shyama would not allow him to do so, saying that she should first be shot than be a widow. The venerable man was helpless and said, "If my son has no Ankh-ki-Sharm, let me pretend to be blind and see nothing." . In one of the greatest climaxes ever presented on the Indian screen, the fatherand the wife carry out their allotted task with epical fortitude and angelic patience in a once happy home that had now become a place of sin. How out fo this chaos they succeed in evolving a life of happiness, can better be seen and enjoyed on the screen than by way of mere wordy narration.
