Rahul is married to Nandita and they arrive in Sikkim to help build a new holiday resort. Rahul and Nandita get close to another couple Amit and Preeti. But gradually Rahul and Preeti develop a special bond which is misunderstood by the society.

Rahul and Nandita have been staying in London for a few years. A creative and successful architect, Rahul is given the responsibility of the Kanchenjunga project. Thereby he meets Amit and invites him home. A friendship develops between them . Rahul tells his colleague how he had left Calcutta years ago following the loss of the baby they were expecting. Back in India Nandita tries to suppress her desire for having a child and joins a montessori school. Amit invites the couple to a party where they meet his wife Preeti who is not quite a proper match for Amit. Preeti is very lonely and frustrated because of her husband's indifference. A friendship develops between Rahul and Preeti. She finds a new life in his sensitive and warm approach to life. In the meanwhile Nandita has tests conducted which reconfirms her inability to have a baby. Rahul however reassures her of his love . He goes to Sikkim for the project. The scenery of Kanchenjunga fills him with awe and arouses his deepest sensibilities. He keeps recording his thoughts in a tape recorder. There are local protests against the project in Sikkim. Amit leaves for London hastily. Preeti requests Amit then leaving for london, to let her accompany him, but he refuses in his usual style. She tries to call Nandita but doesnt get the connection. Hearing that Rahul is in Sikkim, she goes there . She expresses her wish to be a bird and go wherever she feels like and also of how life eventually betrays one. They see the Kanchenjunga on a moonlit night. The next morning Preeti goes to Rahul's room to find him dead . She is insulted by the police who treat her as a prostitute . Amit comes back to desert her. At the funeral ceremony, Nandita stands alone hard as a stone as relatives discuss newspaper reports of Rahul's illegitimate affair. Amit calls up Nandita . She writhes in pain when he mentions Preeti's affair but she doesnt cry. An old Engish friend brings back Rahul's things and tells Nandita that Preeti felt that it was her love that made Rahul what he was.
