Story

Babla is a 1953 Indian Bollywood social film released on 1953. The film is directed by Agradoot.
The dark foul night palls over the slum life-as it used to be-as it will be! Manjari sits by the narrow opening of a window, Dirt and dross and scum everywhere. She stares ahead with vacat eyes, musing on her past. Amidst the winning and pattering of wind and rain she can hear the vioce of Dilip echoing back from the oblivion -"why do I lbour so hard ? It is only to make you happy-my honey !" An ordinary press compositor he was-a simple, naive young man from the village. Very little ambition he had in his life-a cosy room for his own where he could live with his Manju and their darling son Babla. . Still she can remember vividly that awful journey-her first journey to the long-cherished nest of Dilip-with pent up joy and bliss and with Babla clinging to her breast. She can still remember-but all on a sudden came that horrible whirlwind which drifted away all sweet and soft dreams to the oblivion-leaving behind Babla and her to face this stark, unsympathetic world, Manjari screams in horror-she cannot think more-she coughs and coughs and coughs-will she be buffocated to death Spitting blood off her mouth, she tries to inhale a long-drawn breath to relief and mutters her last prayer-"Oh dear-why dont you take me to you now-hasnt the time come yet?" - But what about her boy Babla! Who will look after him!- . A life withers-day by day - inch by inch. . In the din and bustle of street life-a boy hawks newspaper. His eyes sparkles with intelligence -pouting lips speak of tenderness and firmness simultaneously. One cannot easily place him as a through specimen of the wittering, yet self respecting middle class of these days. Is he detached from his own spehere? His voice is unhesitating and straight-"my mother is ill-we are in want of money to buy her medicines-Will you buy one paper from me, Sir?" His grandma asks - "Why should you sell papers?" You are a brilliant boy-you got medals and scholarships-you must strive hard and quiet yourself for higher position in life" - Still Baba hawks paper-Why.. Blasted..Inspite..all the inherent possibilities to grow up and thrive like a luxuriant tree? . His intellect and personality creates impression on Ashoke-His benevolent hand shrinks back in shame from offering any help to this brave boy. He says to his fiancee -"He is one of the self-conscious poor, who has understood that charity will never help the poor". . Manjari coughs and coughs and coughs-inside the lonely, solitary coner of her room-the pall of cold darkness gathers on her eyelids slowly but gradually. The last moment creeps on pace by pace-inch by inch-she screams and yells-"Babla-Babla-my darling boy!" . In the medicine shop Babla argues "How my mother will live-if you demand fifty rupees for the medicine which costs rupees five only?" A sudden row-a supressed alternation-a door bangs a girl moans-Babla runs to Ashoke forgetting everything behind him. . Manjari struggles for breath. She pants -"come-my Babla-come". . The parting call strikes Bablas heart. And he runs to his mother only to find her dead- leaving unsolved the query in the childs heart [Source: Booklet] Check out this page for more updates on Babla.
