Rarely you come across an Indian movie that doesn't hit a single false note. BABY is one such film. Writer-Director Neeraj Pandey has made a brilliant film that is not only technically at par with the best in the world, but it's also a dispassionate non-judgmental take on terrorism that's completely devoid of jingoism and is extremely gripping. Full marks to Producer Bhushan Kumar for believing in such a landmark film, backed by exceptional marketing especially when it's devoid of songs.Read full review4.5

Read full reviewAfter PK, we all hoped for a shift towards good content oriented films and the combination of Neeraj Pandey and Akshay Kumar had already raised hopes (after their previous outing in ‘Special 26′) in delivering yet another gripping film. The theatrical trailer of ‘Baby’ had created the much needed buzz in promising a sleek action thriller film. Unlike most films featuring a superstar in the lead, Baby wasn’t marketed aggressively as the makers were super-confident of the product and always believed that the content will speak for itself. Does ‘Baby’ live upto those expectations? Read the review to find out! Story: The country is constantly under attack by terrorists, and while we always see the forces battling the terrorists during the attacks, a newly-formed elite team decide to tackle the terrorists when the attacks are being masterminded!

The climax is strikingly similar to Argo, but with a little lesser planning and tension. Baby is not overtly dramatic and that saves the day towards the ending. The tempo is just perfect and the pace suits the situation. It’s a thriller in every sense; however Akshay getting calls from his wife in the middle of mission somehow hampers the fluidity. This reminds me of the scene where Mumbai Police Commissioner Anupam Kher receives a call from an insurance agent in a tense scene of A Wednesday. That was funny though.Read full review4.0

It is a testament to Neeraj’s skill that despite these flaws, he’s created a film that has drama and moments in which you clap and cheer. I especially enjoyed watching Taapsee Pannu, who plays a female agent, kicking serious butt. There are glimmers of genuine insight — early in the film, the head of Baby (a suitably grim Danny Denzongpa) says that the fact that terror groups now have Indian recruits reveals a failure of the state. But Neeraj chooses not to pursue that thorny narrative thread. Instead, we stay with the far more palatable and heroic tale of a few good men and one woman ready to sacrifice their lives for their country.Read full review3.0

So no matter whether you like the film or not, it’s hard to deem Pandey a thought provoking filmmaker because Baby seems a lot sillier a few hours after you see it. Pandey is a smart, commercial filmmaker though, because Baby basically exists for the singular purpose of filling three hours of your life with slickly-crafted and frequently outlandish thrills. Business could’ve been far better had the film taken a flying start but its ordinary initial on the one hand and absence of ingredients like romance, music, emotions and comedy on the other will ultimately restrict its business.
