Story

Baraat is a 1960 Indian Bollywood social film released on 1960. The film is directed by K. Amarnath.

Shamu (Ajit) is the son of late Kanhaiyalal and lives in Nandagoan village with his mother (Protima Devi) and younger brother Munna (Salim) . Shamu does not do any work and whiles away his time with his friend Barsati (Mukri) and plays pranks with the villagers and becomes a problem to his mother. Shankar is also a resident of Nandgaon village and both Shankar and Shamu are enemies. Shamu leaves his village and goes to neighbouring village for work. He meets a girl Gori (Shakila) on the way. She takes him to her father Choudhury ( Murad) who comes to know that Shamu is his good friend’s son from Nandgoan. One day while Gori brings food for Shamu in the field she encounters Shankar. Shamu and Shanker meet and fight. Shankar leaves the village and comes back to Nandgoan. He plans to work for himself in field instead of working for someone else. He borrows Rs. 500 from Lala of the village and buys bullocks. Shankar and Shamu keep crossing each other’s path and have altercations. One day Shankar finds that Lala is murdered and he puts the blame on Shamu. But the actual murderer confesses in court and Shamu is acquitted. Shamu plans to leave for Bombay and Barsati accompanies him. Meanwhile Shankar has seduced a village girl Rani and she is bearing the child of Shankar. In spite of this he approaches Choudhury for marrying Gori. All is fixed for the marriage. Shankar is trying to cheat the village girl Rani and this is witnessed by Munna who opposes this. Shankar breaks Munna’s leg and makes him lame. Meanwhile Shamu gets a chance to get into a boxing competition and win. He wins lots of money and returns to Nandgaon. On his return he finds that the marriage of Shankar and Gori is fixed and is taking place. The Poojari ( Brahm Bharadhwaj) of the village gets justice for the girl Rani and in the end the marriage of Shankar and Rani , Shamu and Gori take place.

Shamoo, a handsome, good-hearted but mischievous village boy, had the whole village perturbed due to his orthodox nature, a nature which got a great flip from Barsati, his friend. When the whole village was at the temple at the time of aarti, these two played around with a gun. . The Nambardars son Shankar (scion of a rich family) had deceived a village belle named Rani and having brought her to the verge of motherhood was unwilling to do the honourable thing. Shamoo, standing for Good, was therefore always a thron in the side of Shankar. . Shankar tried to sow the seeds of suspicion in Shamoos mind against his sweetheart Gori resulting in Shamoos quiting the service of field attendant which he had accepted under Goris father in order to be near his sweetheart. . Raising a loan from the village bania Shamoo decided to set himself up as in an independent tiller. He bought a pair of bullocks and other equipment. Meanwhile, Gori (much distracted by Shamoos apathy) came to see Shamoo to clear the misunderstanding. Shankar, however, tried to bring her efforts to naught by sowing even further seeds of suspicion. Shamoos eyes, however, had opened by now and he gave Shankar the thrashing of his life. . Shankar didnt relish being beaten in front of a woman on whom he himself had his eyes. He compelled the village bania (moneylender) to ask Shamoo for the immediate retrun of his loan. However, during his visit to Shammo, the moneylender was killed and Shamoo was arrested as the murderer with the only possible motive. . Goris father who had meanwhile come to Shamoos house with the intent of asking him to become his son-in-law was appalled at the sight of Shamoo in handcuffs being borne off to jail. On the rebound he was forced to accept the offer of the Nambardar to have Shankar instead. . Everything was working out fine for Shanker, the deep-dyed villain. He had cripped Manu (Shamoos younger brother) who was the only eye-witness of his misdeed with Rani. He had removed Shamoo from his path. And the most beautiful girl in the village (Gori) was no betrothed him. . But he didnt know that fate herself had a trump card against him. As the shehnai was playing and he was about to be married to Gori, something cataclysmic happened whcih upset all his expectations and dashed all his hopes.
