Bawarchi is a 1972 Indian Bollywood comedy film released on 1972. The film is directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, produced by Hrishikesh Mukherjee , music composed by Madan Mohan.

This is the story of a joint family living in a big house, though they do not live together in harmony. Noone wants to take care of the house which includes cooking, cleaning, washing etc Shivnath Sharma (Harindranath Chattopadhyay), the owner of the house has three sons, Ramnath (A. K. Hangal), Kashinath, and Vishwanath (Asrani). They live together as a family, and are in the need of a cook. One day Raghu (Rajesh Khanna) enters their house as a cook.

Raghu helps all the members of the family by making them happy, helping them in every way. He also helps Krishna (Jaya Bhaduri), by teaching her dance and helping her get the 1st prize for it. He also helps in making Krishna find her life partner. In the end the love among all the family members grows strong. and each member starts understanding his/ her responsibility.

The story deals with the cause of domestic discord and suggests remedy through tolerance, sacrifice and understanding accomodation. A coo-Bawarchi-symbolises the happy impact and succeeds in bringing home the thematic message of be good unto other as well as oneself and always be ready to be of use to people around. - Old Shivnath was the head of the Sharma family, a position that brought to him more problems than peace. It was a large joint family. Grown-up sons, their wives, and children. Also a grand daughter, Krishna, who had lost her parents in a fatal motor accident. Yet this was a house divided against itself; suffering at all times from discord and disharmony. . When everything seemed to have reached the breaking point, Shivnath watched with dismay and helplessness as he feared that his house, his family-all would just collapse like a pack of cards. When everything seemed to have been lost, there came a man. . A cook, but no ordinary Bawarchi this, though the dishes he served were never less than delicious. In fact, his extraordinary capabilities made the family look at him with suspicion. They could not help wondering how a mere cook could sing, dance, write and recite poems, be adept at even the most advanced mathematics ready to solve great engineering problems, and even prescribe medicine to the ill. Why, they wondered, should such man take up employment as a cook? . These suspicions quickly disappeared. It lok Bawarchi very little time to win over the entire family with his deep and sympathetic understanding of evrey problems, and his endearing love for everyone. Under his stepwards, the unhappy house was transformed into an earthly paradise, where nothing could ever go wrong. The Bawarchi had peformed a miracle, no more, no less. .
