Babu (Dev Anand) who is a crook running away from a murder of his associate Balli (Jagdish) in self defense. Hiding in one village, a man name Bhagat (Rashid Khan) came to knew that Babu is running from police after committing a murder of his associate. Babu starts being blackmailed by him. He was forced to become a long lost son of Shahji (Mazir Hussain) who is rich man in that village. As the story moves on, Babu is in a predicament....unsure as to what to do, when he finds that he is falling in love with Maya (Suchitra Sen), the daughter of Shahji & who started considering Babu as her long lost brother.
