Priyadarshan reveals his multi-faceted craft once again. Digressing from his usual dhamaal comedies, which haven't been quite so uproarious of late, he takes time out to make a desi version of the much felicitated Iranian film, Children of Heaven. Does he manage to capture the warmth and poignancy of Majid Majidi's 1997 classic? Well, partially. For Bumm Bumm Bole is quite a watchable film, both for adults and kids

Darsheel and little Ziyah create an intangible and secret world of hushed wonderment and discovery that takes the narrative far beyond the precincts of the original fable about an impoverished pair of siblings’s desperate but disarming attempt to share a pair of shoes. Yup, Bumm Bumm Bole is quite a ‘shoe’ stopper. The fable is expanded to accommodate a world filled with pain pleasure and other emotions that emerge in the journey from innocence to awareness.

Priyadarshan chooses to leave behind the mindless comedies that he has always been at ease directing and opts for a human drama this time. He succeeds in making it not only engrossing but also a very endearing affair. Screenplay writer Manisha Korde hits a hat trick excelling in three departments that are — story, dialogues and casting. Her story has its heart in the right place the tender moments and situations she has come up with especially between the brother and sister are simply superb. She has managed to strike fine balance between Khogiram’s struggle to make ends meet and the children’s story. Only the terrorism angle looks forced in the movie.

Bum Bum Bole is one of those endearing films about innocent childhood, family bonding and ever lasting love. And it would have been great just that way. The terror infested backdrop was really unnecessary. This is the problem with remakes. Priyadarshan tried to give us Children of Heaven to the book. What he forgot was that the film could have been a very moving one had it only been about a little brother wanting to get shoes for his little sister

When the only breadwinner of a penniless family is employed on monthly salary of Rs 3000, the first thing he buys is two pair of shoes for his kids. The brand of the footwear is Adidas and the amount he might have spent is perhaps as much (if not more) as his income. To accommodate a brand placement, director Priyadarshan muddles up with principal priorities of life thereby mixing up neorealism with commercialism. That’s where Bumm Bumm Bole falters.

Bumm Bumm Bole is a prime — though pint-sized — example of everything that’s wrong with Bollywood. It’s an official adaptation — and not a hush-hush copy — and so there is a definitive benchmark to measure up to. It turns out to be a case study of why and how every idea is Bollywoodised at the cost of soul and sensibility. The original here is that brilliant 1997 Majid Majidi gem Children of Heaven whose international acclaim

A little boy loses a pair of shoes, and goes looking for them. That one-line story became a magical tale in the hands of Iranian director Majid Majidi. Priyadarshan adapts `Children Of Heaven’ ( full marks for giving credit to the original right on top), and comes up with a mixed bag : despite an interesting story, competent acting by the young leads, superb cinematography, which last is the hallmark of all Priyadarshan’s films

There are so many things wrong with director Priyadarshan's adaptation of Iranian gem Children of Heaven, you can't decide where to start. The film's awkward title -- Bumm Bumm Bole -- has no relevance to the story whatsoever, but appears to be a reference to a song in Taare Zameen Par whose young star Darsheel Safary is the lead in this film too. No concern for geographical accuracy or attention to detail

When you decide to adapt the Iranian film by renowned director Majid Majidi, CHILDREN OF HEAVEN [1997], which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, you're shouldering a big responsibility. People are bound to compare the two films. It's inevitable, isn't it? For those who've watched the Iranian film, you'll realize that BUMM BUMM BOLE is not a patch on that film. And those who haven't watched

Bumm Bumm Bole starts with a nicely done animation sequence which informs you that the film is inspired by Majid Majidi’s lyrical film, Children of Heaven. Well this is a watered down version of the classic, with the magic sorely missing, so if you have seen the original you will be very disappointed. For the others, Bumm Bumm Bole remains an average film. Majid Majidi’s film touched viewers across the world

In 1997, Majid Majidi made Children Of Heaven, and immediately marked himself out among the most humanistic of contemporary filmmakers. This quiet film, shot secretly in Teheran to retain the realism of its images, concerns a little kid born to really poor parents. It starts out with his search for a lost pair of shoes and ends up with a racing competition, where the boy is determined to finish second runner's up, so he can win

Considering Priyardarshan had two solid child artistes, he has done no justice to their talent. What was required was a plain simple, original script. This holiday season it had the potential of being a huge hit among the kids. I'm sure most (kids) will stay away or if they venture, will want to leave mid-way. Exactly for the reasons I mentioned in the beginning.
