1In 1879, in Calcutta lives a wealthy young intellectual Bhupati Dutta, who edits and publishes a political weekly in english "The Sentinel". His graceful, sensitive wife, Charu, spends her time doing needlework and reading Bengali novel. Sensing his wife's loneliness, Bhupati decides to invite Umapada (Charu's older brother) & his wife Mandakini to live with them in Calcutta. Umapada arrives and assumes the managership of the magazine. Mandakini, a rustic unlettered girl, chatters away while Charu continues with her earlier pursuits. At this point arrives the literary-minded Amol, to spend a vacation with his cousin Bhupati at the latter's suggestion. Amol helps & encourages Charu with her literary efforts. Almost without realising it, Charu is drawn more & more towards him. Bhupati, busy otherwise, is unaware of this development. Meanwhile Umapada embezzles & escapes with the funds put at his disposal. Shocked by this betrayal, Bhupati relates the tale to Amol - now the only one he trusts. An emotionally guilty Amol, unawilling to hurt Bhupati, leaves a note for him & sneaks out of the house the same night. It is with an effort that Charu conceals her disappointment the next morning. Later, away on holiday with her husband, it seems that Charu has her emotions under control. But on return to Calcutta, a letter from Amol brings back memories & Charu weeps uncontrollably, unaware of her husband standing behind her. Bhupati rushes out of the house. When he comes back, Charu hesitantly extends her hand towards him & asks him to come in.
