Comrades is a 1939 Indian Bollywood social film released on 1939. The film is directed by Nandlal Jaswantal, music composed by Anil Biswas.
IT was a beautiful moon-lit night. In the garden attached to the spacious bungalow of Seth Madhavlal three gangsters were playing - admiring the stars and the moon in their childish way. Jatin was the eldest son of Seth Madhavlal and Kiran was his younger brother Rekha was an orphan girl- a distant relative of the family, but she was brought up with all the luxury and comfort which Seth Madhavlals wealth could offer. To Seth Madhavlal Rekha was almost a daughter, and to the two boys she was indispensible playmate. There was a startling spirit of comraderie between the three. Each wanted to see the other two happy and was prepared to sacrifice to any extent to secure the happiness of the others. Madhavlal himself was a sympathetic generous hearted man and was prepared to risk anything for the sake of his children. Mrs. Madhavlal was a loving mother and a dutiful wife. Mohan was their family servant, but was a good as a member of the family. On the whole Madhavlals household was a typical, happy and contented family with no worries and anxieties. . Years rolled by. Jatin and Kiran were no longer boys. Rekha grew up. She was now a beautiful maiden. With the advance of age the comraderie between the three took a different shape. Rekha was aware of an indefinable feeling which every girl experience in the presence of young men, whenever she met Jatin and Kiran. Jatin and Rekha both loved Rekha, but not as they used to do in thier childhood days. Both poured our into her ears amorous passages tinged with passion. But with Rekha it was different. She was only conscious of the divine spirit of friendship between the three and never distinguished Jatin from Kiran for any favours. . One day Jatin saw Kiran and Rekha alone. He heard Kiran speaking out his heart to Rakha. Jatin, perhaps had never dreamt of the love between his younger brother and Rekha. It had not occured to him. Now he was shocked. His spirit of comraderie did not give room for jealousy in his heart. He was invaded with mixed feelings of happines and misery. A storm raged in his mind. He did not know what to do. He was aware of only one thing two comrades- He knew their path of love would not run smooth if he was there. After a little while, the psychology of a song on the make the way clear for the young lover-as he thought them to be. . Jatin did not know how to achieve what he wanted. He knew he stood very high in the esteem of Rekha. He was loved by all the members of the family and was known to be good. But Jatin wanted to change-or atleast show the world that he was changed. . The next morning there was chaos in the hitherto peaceful household of Seth Madhavlal. Jatin was seen going about with Nirmala, daughter of Tulsidas, one of Madhavlals faithful old employees. This was unusual Innumerable telephone calls were received at Madhavlals office for Jatin-all of them were from "girls"- Slander was in the air. Madhavlal was preplxed. Kirna wondered. Rekha pitied in wept. But none could explain Jatins behaviour. Jatin continued his meetings with Nirmala. Tulsidas approached Madhavlal to maintain the prestige, of his family. And the wonder of wonders, Jatin returned home one evening fully drunk The mother prayed God. The father was fired with anger. Nothing could be done- Jatin was a different man. He was no longer the obedient son. In a heated argument between father and son Madhavlal turned out Jatin from his house. . Jatin was now an outcast. He became a theif, and one day came to his very fathers house to steal. He encountered Rekha. Rekhas appeal to him fell flat. He was determined. He was fully conscious of what he was doing. Nothing could ever persuade him from his determination. Rekha reminded Jatin that he was a comrade of hers and he could not tear himself off from her so easily. She implored him to be his usual self. Jatin only replied that he was just advancing the comraderie by all that he was doing. Rekha could not believe his words. . It was now clear that Jatin was drifting in life. He kept very little contact with his home, and did not seem to care much for what happened to the people who cared for him. But Mrs. Madhavlal, Rekha, Mohan, Nirmala, all wanted to get back Jatin admist them. . What was Jatins motive in thus going away? What were Nirmalas feelings after she came to know that her came was slandered. What did Rekha and Kiran do for the sake of their comrade- Who won in this game of self sacrifice for the love of others. .
