Amongst the communal brawl that erupts in the city, Tara shelters an errant Sakina from a crazed crowd and a bond that blossoms into love is developed. The two eventually get wed and have a son. The happy family who is now living in Amritsar, gets the bump of their lives when Sakina learns that her dad (played by Amrish Puri), whom she believed died in the brawl back in Amritsar, is still alive after seeing his world in a frayed, old newspaper. Upon communicating him, Sakina's dad, who is the mayor of Lahore in Pakistan, arranges for his daughter to depart in Lahore to see him. Sakina goes for Lahore minus Tara and her boy, and upon going to the city, learns of her dad's plans for her - plans that include charging Sakina to forget about her family and start life afresh in Pakistan.
